Salem Fourth-Graders Support North Shore Animal League
Salem Elementary School students brightened up the holidays for many homeless dogs and cats recently. Teacher Heather Schneider's fourth-grade class initiated their own holiday drive in an effort to make animals at the North Shore Animal League happier and more comfortable as they await their new homes. Students collected blankets, towels, pet toys, food, treats and soft pillows to donate to the animal league.
Schneider said the drive laid the foundation of learning the value of giving. The children took a class vote about what charitable program they would like to support, and the North Shore Animal League was the favorite.
"The students learned a valuable lesson about the true significance of the holiday season," Schneider said. "Holidays are not only about receiving, but more importantly, they are about sharing and sacrificing for those less fortunate. I hope this understanding will continue to grow throughout the children's futures."
