Sid Jacobson JCC Honors Contributors to Alzheimer's Progams

This summer, Sid Jacobson JCC honored individuals who have gone above and beyond for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and other related conditions.

The Friendship Circle Luncheon, held in May at The Garden City Hotel, celebrated the contributions of Lee and Michael Dubb to the Long Island community and awarded Norman Schefer and Robert Goldberg of The Fay J. Lindner Foundation with the Tikkun Olam Award and CBS correspondent Barry Petersen with the Communications Service Award. The event, co-chaired by Dayle Katz and Ruth Slade, supports the Friendship Circle, a social adult day program for the frail elderly living with functional or memory impairment as a result of aging, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease or other related conditions. The Friendship Circle Luncheon also funds Let’s Do Lunch, the nation’s first day program for individuals in their 30s, 40s and 50s with Young Onset Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

“If you tell even one person what you learned here about the needs of those with Alzheimer’s disease and their families, then you have already made a difference in their lives,” Barry Petersen said. Petersen’s wife, Jan, was diagnosed with Young Onset Alzheimer’s in 2004 at age 56.

Schefer and Goldberg were also recognized for their generosity in naming the JCC’s The Fay J. Lindner Foundation Senior Center.

Sid Jacobson JCC also honored the members of the Yellow Rose Society at an exclusive evening at Citi Field, hosted by Dayle and Michael Katz. The Yellow Rose Society, co-chaired by Jeri Glaser, Donna Schlessinger and Debra Sutton, was created to provide additional funding and awareness to both the Friendship Circle and Let’s Do Lunch.
