3 Intel Semifinalists at Schreiber

Students were chosen from a pool of competitors across the United States.

Three seniors from Schreiber High School were named Intel Science Talent Search 2012 Semifinalists.

The semifinalists – Hannah Blumberg, Rachel Cohen and Arjan Saraon – will each receive a $1,000 for their research. Schreiber will also receive a $1,000 award for each semifinalist to "further excellence in science, math, and/or engineering education" according to the Intel website.

The Schreiber students were three of the 300 students chosen from among 1,839 entrants among 497 high schools in 44 states, the District of Columbia, and three overseas schools.

Blumberg was awarded for the project "Modeling the Adaptive Venation Network of Physarum polycephalum."

Cohen was awarded for the project, "Identification of Plant Root Controls by Soil Water Diffusivities Above a Water Retention Membrane."

Saraon was awarded for the project "The Effect of Social Media on Grassroot Movements: Analysis on the Usage of Twitter."

Of the 300 semifinalists, 40 will be named finalists on Jan. 25, and will attend the Intel Science Talent Institute in Washington, D.C. from March 8-13. During this trip, finalists will undergo further judging and share $630,000 in awards.

Congratulations to Hannah, Rachel and Arjan on this achievement! Our community should be very proud of these students and the faculty and staff of Schreiber High School who provide the environment for excellence. Facinating projects indeed. I can't even pronounce Hannah's project!
