A Student's View: St. Patrick's Day
When St. Patrick's Day falls on a weekday, many high school students decide to celebrate it not once but twice.
Sadly, St. Patrick's Day did not fall on a weekend this year, so many high school students celebrated it this past weekend. We went to themed parties at night and had a fun and eventful night or two.
Students like myself went to Party City and bought tons of St. Patrick's Day accessories. We wore Irish-themed necklaces, bracelets, tattoos, hats, belts and even suspenders — everything green you could imagine was present. And it seemed like every kid that took part in these themed evenings was wearing some sort of green top.
My friends and I decided to match with a cropped green T-shirt that had a white clover on the front, with a black or white skirt and heels. We had stickers and tons of necklaces with clovers to go along with our outfits.
Even though the celebration was on a faux St. Patrick's Day, it didn't stop any students from having a good time. When the day of celebration doesn't matter for the students, it's the event that matters.
Since the real St. Patrick's Day is today, Wednesday, March 17, I am sure a bunch of students will be wearing festive clothing during school. Some students will go all out with similar St. Patrick's Day-themed accessories, while others might just wear a green shirt.
But the students aren't the only festive ones in the school. Many teachers dress up, and some will often bring in treats for the students. In the past, teachers with an Irish background would make soda bread or bring tea in for their classes. Sadly, I do not have any Irish teachers this year so I probably won't be able to eat any soda bread. And it's really good. I may have to find a way to get some.
In reality, I think it's better when holidays like St. Patrick's Day fall on a weekday because then high school students get to celebrate it not once but twice. Though it may be more appropriate to only celebrate on the real date, students head to school before the sun comes up in the morning and some of our days run until the sun goes down, therefore making it extremely hard to celebrate on a weekday.
So I hope you enjoy your St. Patrick's Day and dress up to the extreme, just as I did this weekend. Whether you celebrated the holiday this past weekend or are waiting until today, I hope it's a good one.
