UPDATE: Students Confirm Name of Accidental Shooter

Jack Carney has been identified by students as the adjunct professor who accidentally shot himself at Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus Thursday.

Carney is a criminal justice teacher at the school. Nassau County Police have also confirmed he is a retired New York City law enforcement officer.

The 72-year-old was attempting to safeguard his licensed handgun in a hallway of Lorber Hall before class time when he "accidentally discharged his weapon," according to Third Squad detectives.

“The round entered and remained in his right leg,” stated a news release. There were no other faculty or staff present at the time, only his students, who came to his aide and proceeded to call 911. They stayed with him until an ambulance arrived.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, and treated for a non life-threatening injury.

The Nassau County resident is expected to make a full recovery. 

Earlier, the school’s emergency alert system notified students via text message that the 'incident' had been dealt with:

“Public Safety Alert Incident resolved. Campus activities proceeding as scheduled. See alert atwww.liu.edu/cwpost.”

An e-mail was also sent out to students and faculty members stating the same “Campus Alert” message as posted on the school’s Web site.

Old Brookville and Old Westbury Police Departments responded to the accidental shooting, which took place on Gold Coast Road, on the east side of campus.

The university has a strict no weapons policy, according to campus officials, and the matter is still under investigation.

Old Westbury Police and C.W. Post Public Safety could not be reached for comment.
