Capital One Bank Wins Latest Golden Storefront Award

Banks are generally judged on rates, not good looks. Yet the attractive façade and well-groomed grounds of Port Washington's Capital One Bank has won the branch both starring roles in the bank's well-known "What's in Your Wallet" ad campaign and now a Golden Storefront Award.

In the bank's ubiquitous ads, the branch at the corner of Port Washington Boulevard and Main Street is marked with a giant red push pin. Now the bank is distinguished by another marker: the latest Golden Storefront Award, bestowed by community groups Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District.

"This is actually the second beautification award we've given the bank," said Residents executive director Mindy Germain. "The first was in 2007 when we launched the Clean Green Zone; we recognized the bank for taking the pains to tie the façade work of their renovation into the vernacular of the LIRR station," Germain added.

The corner lot, which sits at one of the town's busiest intersections, is fastidiously groomed and attractively planted with both shrubs and flowering annuals. The dove grey and white exterior, with its square columns and oversized white lanterns, calls to mind a period New England home.

"It shows that the town appreciates the bank," said Diane Korbel, assistant vice president and branch manager for Capital One, who accepted the award. "The bank made an effort to blend in with the town," she added.

Capital One has  long made an effort to be a good neighbor, supporting both the popular Grande Festa Italiana carnival and fundraiser, run by the John Michael Marino Lodge #1389 and Order Sons of Italy in America and the annual Party in the Park, run by Residents and scheduled for September 26th.

The Golden Storefront Award recognizes businesses for maintaining a debris free storefront and sidewalk area, weeding and watering sidewalk tree beds, regularly sweeping sidewalks, adhering to trash collection schedules and maintaining clear sightlines into store windows.

The "Golden Storefront" is awarded monthly; last month's winner was Ayhan's Mediterranean Marketplace. Votes for merchants can be cast at Residents' web site.
