UPDATE: Blizzard Warning for Nassau County

National Weather Service says heavy snow and strong winds could bring near blizzard conditions.

The National Weather Service has upgraded its winter storm warning  to a blizzard warning for all of Nassau County, including Port Washington, from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon.

NorthShoreAlert, the peninsula's mass notification system, issued the following message via email and text at about 4:15 p.m.:

"In case you are not aware, there is a blizzard alert for our area from 6 a.m. Friday morning until 1 p.m. Saturday. This is a warning; not a watch – a higher level of confidence by the National Weather Service. The warning includes the following: accumlations of 10-to- 14 inches, possibly higher in localized areas. Winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Temperatures on Friday night falling into the 20s. Visibility of one-quarter mile or less with near zero (whiteout) during peak periods. Strongest winds and heaviest snow will occur Friday evening into Saturday morning. Risk of power failures from high winds and heavy snows. As usual, these forecasts may change. So please stay tuned to weather forecasts. Also, in areas where cars may be parked on streets, please try to keep them off the streets so the plows can work."
