Crews Work to Stop Sewage From Leaking into Manhasset Bay

Those living in the Harbor Hills or Mill Pond Road neighborhoods may have woken to the sounds of late-night crews working in the area Monday night.

Robert J. Breslin, superintendent of the Port Washington Water Pollution Control District explains.

“The force main from our pump station at Town Dock has developed a leak that was allowing sewage to enter the bay,” he wrote in an email message.

“Until repairs can be completed, late Wednesday or Thursday, we are utilizing tanker trucks to move sewage from the town dock area to the plant,” he added. “This involves four trucks – two are discharging into a manhole on Millpond Road that drains to our pump station on Smull Place and two are dewatering at the plant site into the pump station at the end of Glen Lane.”

What may prove irksome to some in Harbor Hills is the sound of trucks beeping as they back up during the night, while those by Mill Pond have noted the constant sound of running truck engines.

Breslin said the crews in the area “will continue until the final repairs are completed."
