Jon Batiste Jazzes Port Washington

Modern jazz ensemble were artists in residence at Landmark.

Jonathan Batiste brought a little New Orleans and a whole lot of fun when he and The Stay Human Band were in residence at Landmark on Main Street last week.

The band arrived in Port Washington Tuesday, Feb. 26, and held an open rehearsal for local students on Wednesday. On Friday, audiences were treated to a concert of modern jazz that ultimately evolved into a party, albeit with four very talented, Juilliard-trained guests, including Batiste on piano, Joe Saylor on drums, Eddie Barbash on sax, and Ibanda Ruhumbika on tuba. There was dancing in the aisles, from audience members and musicians alike.

An educator and world-class performer who has graced the stage of Carnegie Hall and been featured on HBO’s “Treme,” Batiste and his band brought a night of high-energy music worth savoring.
