The picture perfect views from Louie's Oyster Bar & Grille aren't just of scenic Manhasset Bay. The street-side view of the iconic waterfront restaurant is winning raves from Port Washington residents who voted it a "Golden Storefront" winner for February.
The Golden Storefront Award is a joint effort of community groups Residents for a More Beautiful Washington (RFMBPW) and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District (BID).
"The Golden Storefront Award was established to thank and congratulate local business owners for providing a place that the Port Washington community wants to shop and or dine," said Roy Smitheimer, Executive Director of the BID. "The more stores that we have participate in the program, the more our local residents will want to try Port first."
The Golden Storefront Award recognizes local merchants for maintaining attractive, well-groomed public facades and sidewalks. Winners must maintain a debris-free storefront and sidewalk area, weed and water sidewalk tree beds, regularly sweep sidewalks, adhere to trash collection schedules and maintain clear sight lines into store windows.
Mindy Germain, Executive Director of RFMBPW, said "We hope that Louie's Oyster Bar & Grille will keep up the excellent work and that the bestowal of this award will encourage residents to patronize this store and for other businesses to strive for the same level of commitment."
The "Golden Storefront" is awarded monthly. Votes for merchants can be cast at www.pwresidents.org. Previous winners include Finn Mac Cools, Sullivan's Quay, White Plus One, and SVH Interiors.

Louie's may be "Good as Gold - but just on the OUTSIDE. Three weeks ago we ate there and were seated upstairs. Service was just terrible. The wait staff was like a skit from SNL. Describing dishes as having good “stuff” on the side in the sauce. The food was barely OK. It was really bad service.
Last week we returned, to use a credit for a dinner my birthday. Who can’t pass up a freebie? Bad choice. It was the final straw. Sat down at 6:15. People who sat down after us got their food long before we did. By 7:00 still no food. At 7:10 it came. They should have just kept it.
Kids ordered off the kid’s menu - lobster tail and fries. Lobster tail was the size of a medium shrimp and the fries had been so over salted even they would not eat them.
My husband’s burger was black on the outside and raw ground meat on the inside – stone cold uncooked raw meat. He had ordered it medium. Not only was it gross, it’s a major health hazard to eat totally raw cold ground beef. My seared tuna was ok. We didn’t eat any of it and called the Manager. Who's in the kitchen?
We asked for the bill and wanted to get out- cereal at home would be better- oh and safer too. They didn’t charge us.
We like to support local businesses in Port, but I suggest you look elsewhere for a decent dinner. We gave Louie’s ample opportunities to prove us wrong. Their bar may be better places to hang out -just skip the food. Not “Good as Gold” on the inside.
