Nassau Notebook: Democrats Make History With New Leader, NUMC Layoffs
A weekly look-in at the news of Nassau County.
Legis. Abrahams Named Leader of Democratic Caucus
On Monday evening, the Nassau Democrats unanimously elected Kevan Abrahams (LD1) as the leader of the Democratic Caucus in the Nassau Legislature.
Abrahams served the areas of Uniondale, Roosevelt, Hempstead and Baldwin for nearly a decade, and will be the first African American leader from either party in Nassau County.
When first elected through a special election in 2002, Abrahams became the youngest legislator ever elected in Nassau County.
"I am humbled by my colleagues' unanimous support," said Abrahams after last nights caucus meeting. "I pledge to be a strong voice for county residents who struggle to survive a poor economy, higher taxes and a decreasing level of quality services."
In 2000, Abrahams joined the legislature staff as deputy finance director, eventually moving up to the position of finance director. He has also served as a legislative assistant and deputy district director for Congressman Floyd H. Flake and as a district representative for Carolyn McCarthy.
Auxiliary Police Looking for Volunteers
The Nassau County Auxiliary Police are seeking motivated people between the ages of 18 and 65 interested in volunteering one night a week in the new Auxiliary Police Communications Unit now located within the new Nassau County Public Safety Center (9-1-1 center) in Westbury.

$7.5 Million Saved With Gas Contract
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announced Tuesday that taxpayers have saved approximately $7.5 million in natural gas costs due to an agreement signed last year with energy service company (ESCO) Hess Corporation.
The agreement, entered into in August 2010, ended a long-standing service agreement with National Grid. This is the first time the county has not received its natural gas service from any company other than National Grid.
NUMC Announces 175 Layoffs
Due to a projected $50 million budget gap, 175 employees at Nassau University Medical Center will be issued layoff notices Wednesday.
Arthur Gianelli, president and CEO of Nassau Health Care Corporation (NHCC), also known as NuHealth, announced Monday that due to a $25 million employee pension cost increase, $15 million reductions in Medicaid Disproportionate Share hospital reimbursements and a $10 million increase in costs for health insurance, pharmaceuticals and supplies, he has made the decision to initiate a "workforce reduction" of 175 employees.

NUMC reamains a problem ridden insitution inspite all Gianelli and other have done to improve it no one from a walk of life fully insured with assets, a wallet, etc. wants to share thier room with a drug addict ot a person who is dirt poor and on Medicaid and so they go elsewhere and NUMC relys on per deium Medicaid reimbursments which are lower and lower. NUMC remains a dump.

The hospital bed and the casket are the great equalizers. People who cannot stand to share a room with someone because of their poverty or addiction aren't really sick. When someone is truly ill, they don't have the energy to carp about who is in the next bed. I know this from personal experience. The whiners SHOULD go to the country club. I believe in reverse segregation. The rich should keep to themselves.

Shame on your comments.
It is a hospital for crying out loud not a country club.
When you are in desperate need of a hospital to tend to your well being thats what it is. It is a county hospital. It is there for all who need it.....
Wonder how many times you have stayed at the Inn when you did not need it...??

When any hospital lays off 175 personnel it is always a bad thing, for rich and poor in the area. If you have a hart attack the ambulance takes you to the nearest hospital, not the one of your choice.

Can anyone advise me of any natural gas company that would be able to hook up a gas line in the D section of Wantagh? Can't stand cooking on a electric stove. Thanks.

NUMC is also our only local burn center. It's important to keep key personnel in place

In Nassau Co. Ministers/Clergy get property tax exemptions well above the $1500 stated in NYS Real Property Law 460 ( what you did not know this?) because of our 0.25% equalization rate. In Hewlett- Woodmere UFSD #14 there are properties getting as much as $13,000 exemptions and paying NO school or town taxes. It is likely happening in your school district too and YOU pick up the exempted taxes that are not collected from Ministers. Want more info? Write to clergyexemption@gmail.com

Please advise who and where this email is to?
I do not think it is to a governmental agency.
If there are proper exemptions someone is entitled to, they can call there local tax office or look online.

Paul...
NUMC is NOT a County hospital anymore. It was sild to a privats corp. years ago. That's why it is officially called Nassau University Med Ctr NOT Nassau County Med Ctr. But due to an agreement with the County, the new owners had to keep the civil setvice unions and their employees' civil service designations.

It is a state public benefit corporation. it was spun off by the county which sold bonds and kept much of those proceeds for the county to use.

Call it whatever you want, it is a hospital for ALL the people. Even you....

The hospital hasn't had a defect the past two years and isn't planning on it this coming year. It really does not get any county assistance any more. In fact the county doesn't the pay money it is supposed to for indigent care. The hospital puts it up so they can at least get state and federal matching funds. Pension costs are 18% of their payroll this year. Most 401ks are a 6% match and employee is at risk. You do the math. They cut a lot of contracts and expenses first. It is the only way to close the deficit. Most layoffs are non-patient care and are done by seniority. if anyone had been in the old ER they would know why it needed to be redone. It was done so that a little kid doesn't need to be next to a drunk or a bad trauma. The new ER is not extravagant, but is clean and functional and set up for a mass casualty if it ever happens. If you look online at there quality data, it has improved dramatically. There are still some things that could be better, but it improves every year.

Diane...I have a similar problem. I own a house in Massapequa and the gas line stops half way up my block. So about a dozen of my neighbors have only electric and oil in their homes.
When I inquired years ago how to get gas installed, LILCO told me to get all my gasless neighbors together and agree to sign up to pay to fully convert to gas heat, cooking, and laundry. But the cheapo neighbors wouldnt go for the cost since many were old farts and getting ready to move to Florida.
So you may also have to get all your neighbors to sign on BEFORE any gas company goes to the expense.

No one on my block has gas. What a pain if I have to harass my neighbors for this. The gas company would be smart just to do it for one person and then others will follow if they know it is available. I'll give them a call and find out. Thanks.

NUMC is run by NuHealth, a private corp, and is affiliated with North ShoreLIJ Med Ctr.
The County Hosp went from being called Meadowbrook, until the 1970's, and then to Nassau County Med Ctr until 2000, and then privatized and renamed Nassau Univ. Med Ctr. since.
I still wouldnt go there unless you put a gun to my head. I prefer Winthrop or South Nassau.
Victor

It is not private, it is a state public benefit corp. Look it up. That is why they have civil service unions and state pensions.

lloyd and victor-
you are both correct. NUMC is officially and legally a ny state "public benefit" corporation, so is the LIRR- and look what a great job they are doing<<<sarcasm>>.
Lloyd

Does that mean they can charge fares too?
I think they already charge a parking fee, but didnt when it was NCMC.
And the agreement with the County was that Civil Service would continue at the new NUMC so no workers would lose their benefits, pensions, seniority, wages, etc. Now those Union costs and rules are coming back to bite 'em.
Victor

Unlike the MTA, NUMC can not raise fares and unlike the government, they can't raise taxes. They had there state aid cut and get little from the county. Unlike other Hospitals in the area, they still will treat anyone, regardless of their ability to pay. Try telling the MTA you don't have money for the fare.
The difference between the old NUMC and the new is two fold, they will not run huge deficits like in the past and they are focused on providing quality care to all. They have been in the black because of good management past few years and quality is improving. They are above the state average on many quality indicators.

Look how the Dems and the media IMMEDIATELY attacked Clarence Thomas and Herman Cain....two highly respected Black Conservatives.
This could be my final posting herr.

I agree. NUMC is improving. And they do offer certain medical and psychiatric care that other hospitals dont. And they are a teaching hospital with interns and resident doctors, programs many hospitals dont have.
They still do a better job of caring for all those who come through their doors, even the poor and uninsured.
This is what scares away much of the middle and upper class patients, who dont want to be crowded in with welfare and poor people.
