North Hempstead Notebook: Aircraft Noise, Students in Albany and Discounts

Amid concern over the din of helicopter and commercial aircraft noise in North Hempstead, Supervisor Jon Kaiman met with local and state elected officials and Federal Aviation Administration representatives last week. The event aimed to enable officials to keep residents abreast of the situation and further the dialogue on the matter.
“The first step is to understand the issue so we are communicating with each other,” Kaiman said, in a statement. “People invest in a community and to have that world turned around seems unfair.”
In attendance were FAA officials including the district manager and the airspace re-design specialists. Also there were Rep. Gary Ackerman, Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, and Nassau County Legislators Judi Bosworth and Wayne Wink. In addition representatives from the offices of U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand were present as well as State Assemblyman Charles Levine, Nassau County Legislator Richard Nicolello, and North Hempstead Council members, Anna Kaplan, Dina DeGiorgio, and Angelo Ferrara.
The next informational session will be in early early summer, and than a public meeting after that.
Recycled Art Winners Tour Albany
Twenty student winners of the town's recycled art contest joined Kaiman, Councilwoman Viviana L. Russell and Councilman Tom Dwyer on Wednesday to Albany, where their work was on display at the Capital Building.
Students attended meetings on the environment and government to see the kind of work conducted in Albany.
Students met with Sen. Jack Martins, Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, representatives from the Department of Environmental Conversation, Assemblymen Charles Lavine and Robert J. Castelli, as well as Assembly Historian Jack McEneny.
Discounted Admission
In an effort to promote healthly lifestyles for residents, the town is offering half-priced daily entry fees to North Hempstead Aquatic Activity Center (AAC) at Michael J. Tully Park during Presidents Day weekend, Feb. 18 - 20.
The revamped facility features a figure-eight slide and three separate zones, an interactive area with six water features, a zone with six lanes for lap swimming and a zero-depth entry zone for wading. A pool lift is also available. The expanded exercise room has a wall of windows overlooking the pool, and new spin cycles
Discounted holiday rates: adults - $5.50, teen - $4, child - $3.50, senior - $3, disabled - $3, veteran - $3, nonresident guests - $7.
North Hempstead residents must bring identification, such as a driver’s license. Guests must be accompanied by a town resident.

How about some attention to the NHP aircraft noise from JFK arrivals every single day? When the patterns changed our houses endure the jets one landing after another were part of the Town too No one cares about us as. We endure the tens of jetliners flying low overhead regularly too. Our community has many seniors I don't know how they tolerate this horrific noise.

Last night(Tuesday,Jan 23rd) at about 10:30PM, there was the loudest plane noise by far that I have ever observed in the !7years I have lived in Port. The noise was a prolonged one,and there was also tremendous vibrations caused by this.If we wanted to experience this situation, we'd had moved to the 5Towns, where they expect these things.If this continues,it will adversely impact our quality of life as well as our property values. We can't and shouldn't simply wait for more meetings and more bureaucracy. If the FAA could change the routing of planes, over houses instead of water, without listening to us, obviously, we and/or our reps are not being very effective. We need a concerted campaign to cause a change now!

We heard it as well , it was an MD80 . To me it sounded as if they had to make some sort of quick change in direction , the noise was nearly full throttle engines. It was on the way to LGA , but not the typical path that has been taken since 20 October when the onslaught began .It was highly unusual that is for sure. I will be sending in a direct complaint to the FAA and TONH 311 line for this , its on the to do list .
