Port Washington Venture Crew Honored by North Hempstead Board

Members of Venture Crew 556 of Port Washington were recognized by members of the Town of North Hempstead board Tuesday night for their service during Superstorm Sandy.

The members of this group set up cots at the high school shelter, provided food, created a spontaneous Halloween party and unloaded about 36,000 bottles of water.

"They maintained a sense of privacy and decency," Venture Crew Advisor Paul Ferguson said of the group's security that was provided at the shelter.

Supervisor Jon Kaiman said, "We try to recognized people who do extraordinary things in our community."

"We're very fortunate to have a group of our young folks in the Town who stepped up," Kaiman said. "It's great to know that we can count on our boy scouts in times of peril."

Councilwoman Dina DeGiorgio noted, "The Boy Scout troop was an integral part of the shelter."

She added that this group "represented the best of our community."
