Port Washington Wins AAA's Top Platinum Award

The community was honored for its traffic safety programs.

Port Washington won AAA’s top Platinum Award for the outstanding effectiveness of its traffic safety programs.

The community was one of four winners in AAA’s annual Community Traffic Safety Awards Program, which recognizes outstanding organizations, individuals and communities for their efforts to make the region’s roadways safer for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Over the past five years, Port Washington demonstrated a 75 percent reduction in bicycle injuries, and seat belt usage at or above 97 percent. Other successful traffic safety initiatives include the Pedestrian Crosswalk Safety Program, Operation Buckle Up Program and STOP-DWI Program. Port Washington was also awarded a Pedestrian Safety Citation for having three years without a pedestrian fatality.

AAA honored Port Washington for its safety efforts on Oct. 25 at a luncheon ceremony at The Carltun in East Meadow. Other winners include Garden City, as well as Pleasantville and White Plains in Westchester County.

We had a bicycle rider killed on Port Washington Blvd. near Marino Ave. a few months ago. Unfortunately the public never learned the facts of this accident. No one has let the public know how it happened. I find it hard to believe this is a safe community traffic wise.. With all the bicycle riders and joggers I see on the roads before daylight or in the early evening, I think there are many more accidents waiting to happen.

Yes it is sad to hear about a death..... but all too often we take our everyday lives for granted. Just think that with todays "high tech" smart phones and texting- young adults both walking and driving have too many distractions. I am worried that accidents will happen- fortunately though Port Washington has an alert group of crossing guards who are always "looking out" for us and our children. "Hugs" to all of them.

Port Washington is fortunate to have a dedicated and compassionate group of crossing guards. These dedicated women work under dangerous circumstances, in stressful situations and in all kinds of weather; all for the protection of our community, especially our children. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to community safety.
