Question Of The Day: Port Holiday Magic
Will you make a point of shopping local on Saturday?
Port Holiday Magic offers a way to support the community, along with local merchants.
The event takes place Saturday from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. There will be shopping specials throughout town, and trolleys ferrying people about. From 4-8 p.m, carolers, live music and street performers will provide entertainment.
Residents for A More Beautiful Port Washington says that for every person who spends $100 in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, donations and other expenditures. When $100 is spent in a national chain, only $43 stays locally.
Take a look at some of the deals and entertaiment offered on Saturday. Do you plan to take part in the festivities?
Last year, similar events took place during the week. Do you think it's better to hold the event on a Saturday? Will it draw bigger crowds?

I think that our local Home Goods/TJMAXX a national chain is the most busy retail establishment in Port Washington the store is run by freindly people managers Julie and Effiie are pleased to greet me and they employ locals and have a great return policy.
I suspect that a small mom and pop store could not afford to run this kind of opperation and grant a liberal return policy - at Peter Andrews in Williston Park nothing but a store credit is given even if you bring an item back immediatly you do not get your money back under any circumstances.
And so national chains may be the answer for Port Washington - Home Goods is an asset to our community and the $43 that Residents says we get from national chains is more than a For Rent sign would generate for Port Washington.
At White & White and Dolphin Book Shop, Bubba Brown, etc. it is too hard to park and cross Main Street the high curbs, crummy sidewalks in front of Bubba Brown, , etc. make this section of town too hard for the disabled and senior citizens and parents with young children to shop.
The newly renovated shops on Port Blvd where Rite Aide is have no anchor tenant most of them are vacant For Rent signs in the windows.
Our local economy is struggling.
I plan to do a small amount of shopping in Port in the comming weeks.
