Question of the Day: Supporting Local Business

What if everyone spent a day rallying around one particular business? Which store would you recommend?

Could this happen in Port Washington?

Locals in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, recently turned out to support a local business that had been serving the community since 1857.

Resident Jim Black sent out an e-mail to about 40 people, prompting, in effect, a "cash mob."

"Let's show our support for one of our local businesses," he wrote in his email. "I challenge everyone to spend AT LEAST $20 at the hardware on the 21st." And they did, with scores of people lining up even before the store opened its doors for the day.

Which local business would bring out the same support in Port Washington?

The stores I frequent most often seem to be doing very well. I go to Carlo's once per week for takeout. We also give a lot of business to Bayles Nursery year round. I shop at King Kullen usually twice per week and I visit Alpers at least once per month. In addition I buy gas from local outlets and have my car serviced on a regular basis at Bill's Auto. My family supports the local dentists and doctors and we purchase flowers etc. from Falconers. The cream rises to the top and the merchants we deal with are thriving.

My wife reminded me that she gets her hair done at C3 Salon and Shine and goes to Ogi's nail salon. And she loves to buy fruit and vegetalbes at North Shore Farms. We go to Dairy Barn for fresh milk and other products.

I make it a point to have my prescriptions filled at Hunold Pharmacy....they fill while you wait in 5-10 minutes maximum. Give them a try and I promise you will never wait at RiteAid for HOURS again! Doctors are able to send info there electronically so it is easy.

The Dolphin Bookshop. With Barnes & Noble the last bookstore standing, our precious local, independent bookshop that's been here for 65 years is a treasure that we should go out of our way to partonize and defend! And it's a fun, wonderful place to shop, to be, to browse, to meet and chat with neighbors - not to mentino with Patti!

In my opinion, unless a merchant in Port does something REALLY BAD why speak negatively? Just my opnion.

The Verizon Zoom store on Main Street is wonderful. The guys are so helpful and have really gone above and beyond helping my family over and over again. And, it is much cheaper than the Manhasset store! We have many wonderful restaurants as well. Sullivan's Quay (Port's own "Cheers") Ginos and Shish ka bob are always delicious, reasonable and make you feel at home. This is such a wonderful place to live, I only wish we could figure out a way to get more of our storefronts occupied!!!

@ Susan B. Copeland - How can the prices at Verizon in Port Washington be "much cheaper than the Manhasset store"? This is Verizon the same company the same merchandise and the prices are the same.

Since it is a franchise, they don't pay the advertising costs of Verizon owned store, therefore their products cost less and there is negotiating room. That being said... I walked by this morning and they were closed!!! What's up with that? Was it something I said, lol

@ Susan B. Copeland I saw the same sign this morning closed is our Verizon store you can bet if they were making any money they would not have closed. Add one more empty store back to Main Street in Port Washington.

@ Copeland I was glad to see that Verizon had reopened and I knew that you would beat me to the punch letting blogg readers know.

I wonder why they shut down for 48 hours?

I never go in I have a consultant who provides ALL of my technology type gadgets I pay her to get me the best deals saves me alot of time.
