Port Washington is full of places to volunteer and active residents who donate their time to these organizations.
Patch has a section where groups can post notices if they need volunteers, which can be accessed here.
Do you volunteer? If so, where? Do you need volunteers for your community group? Tell us in the comments.

I volunteer at Port Washington's local historical society, the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society. We preserve and celebrate the history of Port Washington wherever we find it! If you'd like to get involved, drop a note to info@cowneck.org. Better yet, stop by our Country Fair on Saturday, September 10, at the Sands-Willets house at 336 Port Washington Blvd (just past Uncle Guiseppe's). Lots of great things for kids, parents and everyone else in PW. Check out www.cowneck.org for more information.

The Port Washington Fire Department is always looking for men and women to join its ranks. The service provided by the PWFD is vital to the safety our community. The extensive training takes time, dedication and perseverance. The reward is knowing you are giving back to our community by helping others when they need help the most.
Thank you.

My volunteer efforts are divided among three local organizations. One is NSKC, the North Shore Kayak Club. Our goal is to get people out paddling so that they can enjoy the beauty and serenity of our local waterways. One can learn a little more about us by seeing our short video on You Tube or by calling (917) 400-7041. Secondly, I devote time to TBI, Temple Beth Israel. This is the synagogue in town for people seeking to embrace a Conservative Judaism lifestyle. TBI can be contacted at 767-1708. Lastly, I am involved with ABCFMSMC, the Alan Bergman Center For Men Suffering Midlife Crisis. I believe that this organization's name is rather self-explanatory.

I volunteer at the Port Washington Public Library as an ESL teacher. It's a great thing to do if you love working with people. The library provides training, and then you can decide what level of class you want (beginners, intermediate, etc). My mom (also a Port resident) and I have been teaching a class together for years now.
I also am a trustee with the Cow Neck Peninsula HIstorical Society -- which Chris mentioned earlier. I've just started with them, but it will be my third year helping out at the Country Fair.
I used to be on the board of directors of the Teen Center -- which is part of the Port Washington Youth Council. The teen center operates out of the Landmark building, and provides teens with a safe, supervised environment to hang out after school.

Great idea, I love reading about our wonderful community. Right now I am volunteering my time to help Dina DeGeorgio have her name listed a third time on the ballot in November for Port Washington Coucilwoman. We need 700 signatures and its hard to explain to people that signing the petition is not an endorsement for Dina but an endorsement of the democratic process . If anyone knows of a place where I can get some signatures to help this underdog candidate to level the playing field in November please email me at josie@votefordina.com. Thank you. Josie Bishop

I volunteer for the Port Washington Education Foundation (www.pwef.org). PWEF raises funds and awards grants for projects that go above and beyond the scope of the school district budget to enhance the education of our children. In addition to all the great projects we support, it's a great group of people on the Board.
