Sting Operation on Madison Taxi
Police work hand in hand with Nassau County Office of Consumer Affairs.
As recently as Thursday morning, you could call Madison Taxi in Port Washington for a pickup. Yet it was not a legitimate business, says the Nassau County Office of Consumer Affairs.
Port Washington police and the County’s Consumer Affairs conducted a sting operation on unlicensed taxis and vehicles and improperly licensed drivers working for Stuart Madison, who was running Madison Taxi.
Thursday morning they seized three vehicles, including a van and a Town Car.
Madison Taxi had operated from Four Haven Avenue but left that location in October. Currently, Superpages.com lists Madison Taxi at 149 Manorhaven Boulevard, although the storefront window sign reads “Port Washington Taxi.”
Police say that off and on Stuart Madison had operated Madison Taxi legitimately for about eight years. Yet during that span he also had violation problems and unlicensed operators. This time around he had let the licenses expire and had stated that he was out of business.
Police, however, discovered that Madison was still operating his company when they previously ticketed a driver working for him.
“He was unlicensed and uninsured,” said Police Officer Brian McCarty, who worked the case with Police Officer Drew Haagenson, under Deputy Chief Ron DeMeo. “If they [the drivers] got into an accident, who covers the passengers?”
Still, police and Consumer Affairs had to prove that Madison was operating illegally, dropping off paying customers in vehicles without having proper for-hire licenses and insurance.
After a two week investigation, Port Police and the County’s Consumer Affairs conducted the sting, calling the company for pickups at three separate locations. Once the drivers acknowledged they worked for Madison, they were issued tickets in lieu of arrest. At the third location, Madison himself was the driver.
The Nassau County Taxi and Limousine Commission requires that drivers go through a background check to help ensure that there are no pedophiles or convicted robbers behind the wheel, said Kenneth M. Heino, executive assistant to the commissioner of Consumer Affairs. The vehicles must be safe for the roads and safe for passengers.
Otherwise, he said, “the consumer is at risk.”
The fee to register a for-hire vehicle with the TLC is $5, as is the fee to renew registration.
No one was at the Manorhaven Boulevard location on Thursday afternoon, and a call to the office indicated that the number was out of service.
Fines and possible jail time are not yet determined, according to Madalyn F. Farley, Acting Commissioner of Consumer Affairs.

I kept meaning to switch my car service account over to Madison because I heard they charge less than Deluxe and I'm glad I never did so. Glad the crime-stoppers caught up with them but I also wish the police had clued us in earlier.

Great job. Talking about hiding in plain sight. These are the type of businesses that hurt us all, since they are not paying their fair share of taxes and also hurting the legitimate ones. I say don't stop there we should now start looking at quite of few contractors here in this area that are not registered, pay their workers cash, improper insurance, to start off with. Get everyone legal and that would only means more tax revenue and less tax increases to everybody. Just a win-win.

Hey if Delux is the only one who plays by the rules than that is what it will be. There was a reason why Madison was cheaper it was because they were not playing by the rules. So here is to the real companies who do it right and pay their taxes.

Hey I met Stu and spoke with him at lentgh one day about some of his life, his country of origin and his love of animals. Maybe you have seen me and my dog around town, a very large, very loveable brindle coat English Mastiff named Tamon. Any man who loves his animals the way Stu loved and cared his for is alright in my book. From small business to multi-national corporations evry one of them cut corners; it has been part of the American fabric since the dawn of the industrial age and before. I agree the insurance rap is serious although I am curious if his competitor dropped the dime on him? From what I hear Delux doesn't get rave reviews either.

Raegun just because Stu loves animals does not make it right. I am an animal lover and I take my dog everwhere with me, but I pay my taxes, fees, insurances and so on. To say it is the fabric of America to cheat is insulting and does not make it right. By having a business like this where they do not pay their taxes, insurances and so on only makes it more expensive for everyone who does do it right. I aplaud the government in this crack down in this area and other areas such as payroll violation where people are paid cash or incorrectly. That is tax evasion and it if everyone paid their fair share we would not have budget issues.
As for the Delux possibly dropping the dime on Madisson who cares? I have no problems turning in my compeitors who do not comply with the laws. So Stu to a gamble and guess what he lost.

I've been using Madison Taxi since I moved to Port and have a good relationship with Stu and his wife Julie (who also runs the company). According to them, there's more to the story. They've had the license renewal paperwork with the Town of North Hempstead for a while and the town is stalling on the renewals and not cooperating.
I can't say whether it's conspiracy or merely bureaucracy (Stu thinks the former), but he says he's been trying to play by the rules and the rulemakers are apparently not playing fair. Stu had other things to say about corruption and bribery with the Town that I won't share here. But that's not new for the Town; last year there were a number of arrests of town officials and legislators related to the New Cassel Redevelopment Project (google it) and a couple years ago 5 building department officials were arrested on bribery and coercion charges.

So you are telling me two wrongs make a right? We all know the town is incompentent. What does the building department have todo with the taxi company. Look I have owned my business for over 50 years and guess what? We seem to get our renewals done every year. We register with over 50 authorities and muncipalities, and it gets done all the time. Not that tough. Also ask Stu where was his insurances? Is that the town's fault? Or what about a car without a hack tag picking up fares? Is that the town's fault?

I have only been in Nassau County a short while. In the scope of global news events, this story is less than insignificant. That being said, some guy who must be in his seventies (owned his own company over 50 years) finds it necessary to check this blog everyday to beat this poor taxi guy to death. It is my guess that he either has some serious personal hatred against this Stu (about whom I only hear good things). He is putting way too much energy into an old story for this not to be personal.

When I read this story, the self righteous jerk writing the libelous comments was "Longtime Port." I believe that Longtime Port admits he is Delux's owner. Someone else must have figured it out as well, because Longtime Port has attempted to "spin doctor" his error in the last 20 minutes by changing his online ID to Scott Model, a Delux driver living in Harbor Homes.
The other Scott Model lives very close to Delux's owner in Suffolk county. I am sure there will be some further spin to fix the story and the errors Like I said, I have only been here a short time, but if I can find this info online in a matter of minutes, someone who job it is to report the news could have spent a few minutes FACT checking.

New Intown, I feel you better correct yourself. I am not and am not associated with Delux taxi. I am a business owner that works in 7 different states where I am legal registered and insured. I do not see why I am a villian here? What for wanting a business to be registered, insured and to pay their fair share of taxes? If that makes me a bad person than so be it. I make no apologies. My question what would of happened if a fair was involved in an accident where someone was hurt in a taxi that was not registered properly with out the proper insurance?
So I suggest you redirect your anger to companies who do not play by the rules and cost us taxpayers who do the right thing .

Found this idiot is still doing business ....not only did he abuse the public but also abused his employees....this man is a menace to society....his wife also was a piece of work...collecting "taxes" but NEVER.giving anyone a W-2 or W-4...what many people are not aware of his she would also have people in private cars provide taxi services...this such a flagrant abuse if anyone was hurt in an accident they would not be covered in way...thousands of dollars in parking tickets...uninspected and poorly maintained cars...no insurance and this goes on and on...hope that the police continue watching this so called taxi service and use the law which this service disregaurds to the fullest extent!!!
