The Real Deal on Real Estate: Historic Flower Hill
The Village of Flower Hill is a historic and established neighborhood great for move-up buyers.
This is Part Two in a weekly series on the many different neighborhoods of Port Washington.
The Village of Flower Hill encompasses Roslyn, Manhasset and Port Washington. The Port Washington portion is in Port's southern end along Port Washington Boulevard. Flower Hill lives up to its name, as the area is beautifully landscaped with flowering trees and shrubs, the streets are pretty and winding, and the homes beautifully maintained. (Note: there is no parking on village roads and "for sale" signs on homes are not allowed.)
It's difficult to trust some of the statistics found on sites such as City Search or even our local multiple listing service because of the confusing mix of towns, hamlets and villages. Listing agents usually do not list a home using "Flower Hill," opting instead for the better known Roslyn, Manhasset or Port Washington. In any case, you can be fairly certain that a home in Flower Hill will be priced on the high end, averaging just under $1 million — double the Nassau County average, and not for the average first-time buyer.
Some of the more famous places in Flower Hill are St. Francis Hospital, known nationally for its cardiac care, and a number of historic buildings, including the Sands-Willets House. The house, its grounds and Dutch barn are lovingly preserved by the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society. It is open to the public, and an annual event is held around the winter holidays with crafts, freshly baked desserts, antiques, decorations and more. This yearly event is hosted by volunteers in charming period costumes. I find it to be one of the more enjoyable annual holiday traditions, and another reason why Port Washington is the place to be.
