Update on Bay Walk in Port Washington North

New operating hours help ensure a fun and safer park.

Summer strolls up and down along Shore Road are a popular pastime in Port Washington North. Now village officials are seeing that final touches are being added to ensure a safe and fun place for residents and visitors.

But those hoping to enjoy a snack at Bay Walk will likely have to bring their own. As of Thursday, thehad not yet received any proposals from would-be food vendors.

As for the hours, Bay Walk Park is open from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. The operating hours, announced at the June 7 Village Hall meeting, follows those of the Bay Walk's pier.

Anyone in the park after hours may be subjected to a forced removal from the park or even a violation issued by the police.

However, Mayor Bob Weitzner noted, "This is not to suggest that if you are walking along the Bay Walk to the bus or to someone's house that you are illegally in the park."

The inspiration for the enforcement of operating hours came from past experiences with "not so good" things happening late at night, Weitzner noted.

"There have been times in the past, thankfully few, where people have been doing things that we didn't find desirable at very late hours in the evening," Weitzner said.

As a deterrent, he added, "We have imposed more or less a curfew on the park much like many other parks in Port Washington, North Hempstead and Nassau County."
