VIDEO: Unions Rally Against Mangano Legislation

Dozens of unions from across New York State came together in front of the Nassau County Legislative Building on Monday to rally against what they called the “Anti-American and Anti-Union” agenda of County Executive Ed Mangano.

The impetus behind the rally is Mangano’s legislation known as the "Fiscal Crisis Reform Act," which, according to the union representatives, would allow the county executive to break contracts with unions whenever he sees fit.

However, Mangano said that he is simply asking for concessions in an effort to lower taxes.

“Rather than waste members’ dues on T-shirts and juvenile signs, union leaders would serve their members responsibly by getting their butts to the negotiation table," the county executive said. "The fact remains if union bosses fail to negotiate, more of their members will lose their jobs or will be furloughed."

Mangano added: "It is a sad day in America when union bosses are arrogant enough to claim that asking for concessions is 'Anti-American.' ... I continue to offer union bosses the opportunity to negotiate — however, I will not give in to threats. I stand with the residents of Nassau County who are struggling to make ends meet — nothing is more American than that."

Maybe some of you people better open up the history books and why we have unions in the first place or maybe watch a movie or two like Norma Rae or Silkwood or Blue Collar or Grapes of Wrath... shall i go on. We have the right to be in a union, and have a contract to protect us and the most recent contract was agreed on by the legislature... all was signed and legal, now they can take that away. It's like signing a contract that you own a house and then they take it away cause they don't believe you should have it... That's what this is like, they take that contract away i won't be living here anymore cause i can't afford the house i am living in and i won't be able to take care of my children and their health.

Private Sector does the same job for less which is why there is this movement to privatize vital services. The choice is simple tell your Union to roll back salaries or accept the upcoming layoffs with grace. All you are saying in the post is that it's the union way or nothing. The nothing is privatization and layoffs. Yes there is a reason for Unions and I don't disagree with them being necessary but the Union has gone too far in recent years by jacking up salaries way beyond non-union salaries to the tune of probably close to 2 times what a non-union person makes when you include all benefits. Now you have companies swooping in and offering the County a much cheaper method to run certain depts and the only ones that lose are the unions. If you want to survive the union contract needs to compete with private. It is arrogant of the Union to say the county can either accept the contract or we strike. The Union is under the assumption it holds all the cards but the disparity between the cost of running it within the county and outsourcing is so great it will be the Union that suffers. The Tax Payers want what makes sense not what the Union thinks they are entitled to.

Mangano is in way over his head. The unions have continually approached him to negotiate real solutions and all he does is thump his chest a la Chris Christie. He has no real solutions and has chosen to ride the anti-union wave since he can't figure this out. Everyone in Nassau loses out the longer he makes this go on.

Seriously the venom is crazy this morning. Now here is my problem with your current statement. You call 911 and 5 cop cars show up. Why do we need 5 cop cars to show up. If we are in the safest county do we really need 4 back up cars for a 911 call. Do we actually need all of those police officers? Last week in Suffolk county I saw someone get pulled over by one police car, then two other cars showed up and there was a little coffee clotch action while the person pulled over was standing around waiting to either get a ticket or be sent on his way.

Tanii Chin, you are SO right! When I see cops standing around, I think "if these guys don't have anything to do, they should be doing pushups at least in a parking lot full of glass". I mean c'mon, where are my tax dollars GOING? Well maybe not the pushups part, but seriously these guys are nothing like the cops on CSI (my favorite show btw). They do REAL police work. Cops in my area should be chasing drug dealers constantly, like the one last week who robbed my neighbors daughter at knife point for her ipod. After the drug dealer got caught by the cop, he tried to stab the cop in the neck with that knife and got pepper sprayed! I heard the cop and his family got SUED because the idiot cop used too much force. And you know the worst part of it all, the cop got the day off from work AND got paid for it while he was in court!!! You believe this crap? MORE wasted tax money. Take it from me, I believe everything I read and hear cuz I know whats really going on, like when I pass cops at a crime scene you know they're not doing anything, just standing around talking. I catch up on all my news when i'm at work, like I am right now on a Tuesday afternoon wasting my company's dollars!!! Don't tell my boss lol cuz he would fire me in a heartbeat if he knew I was totally this useless! Anyways, I'm gonna go check my FB status real quick. Don't let these cops get a minute of rest! They're robbing people like you and me Tanii!!!!

Ahh another F. Peter fantasy scenario. Another holier than thou only my opinion counts and is right. Do you have anything intelligent to say or is it just sarcastic fantasy scenarios? Have you ever priced out a Union job vs. a non-union job? Have you ever seen a police car sit in the same spot for over 4 hours with no activity? These are reality not fantasy or sarcasm. As far as you wasting company time, well that's on your boss to control. In theory you should lose your job just like anyone wasting company time and money. Some are more lenient than others. My company regularly asks managers what websites they want blocked like facebook and CNN. Just because you are a poor employee F. Peters, doesn't mean everyone is. I believe that was the point that many on this board have been trying to make that you like to ignore. Nobody is saying the police don't deserve to be compensated but not to the tune of $250K. We are claiming and it is a claim that perhaps the county could do with fewer cops at the current compensation if there isn't enough for them to do that there are 5 cars at a single scene. Maybe only 2 needed to be assigned to that case and the rest could be patrolling that neighborhood you live in with the high crime rate.

I was at a CVS in Nassau Co a few months ago at 1am. There was a six car response there just as I arrived. I though that it was an armed robbery in progress. They had a suspect in cuffs on the kerb and were searching his car. A store clerk informed me that the cause was a shoplifting incident. Its a serious waste of resources to react with 6 cars to something like this!

It was a nice sound bit from Magano but we'll see what he really does. The Union bosses (not the rank and file) have the town, county and country by the privates, they are promising their members benefits that are quite frankly are unrealistic in this economy especially when you see those cases where Union workers are blatantly slacking on the job. It's very hard in today's society to feel bad for people with job security, large benefits packages and pensions. I don't discount their plight to keep their jobs but the Union system must change, it's just not effective anymore.

When are you talking about? The regular joe hasn't made more than a union employee or gotten bonuses in over 20 years. Non union employees haven't received a pension since in over 30 years. Most people do not get big bonuses or benefit packages. No one in my private company has received a bonus since 2007. Too bad your sarcasm doesn't translate into intelligent thought or understanding of the issues.

No I don't belong to one of "those unions" as you say. If you think they make tons of money--take one of the civil servants tests--The ones who are paid a ton of money are the political appointments -direct your anger to where money is wasted -example-- lets spend millions fighting a state law because Mangano doesn't want to be told anything--water authority--oops I probably hit a sore spot

F.Peters the union rep. Garbage man works, but he shouldn't get paid more than a NY State Senator or College professor. Correction officers work but they shouldn't get paid more than a Senator. I don't care how long they have been on the job there needs to be a cap. There are many people that collect garbage and get paid less than 50% of what union garbage men make. This isn't about the job they do it's the imbalanced compensation for what they do. By the way I know a few retired Corrections officers, your fantasy about their job isn't even close accurate.

I believe that there are TWO parties to a contractual agreement. The Union and Management. If one was to think this through rationally. Ask yourself this question. A Union cannot simply take benefits or salary increases for itself can it? That must be AGREED to by the opposite side, aka Management. So if a Union negotiates a fair agreement, and Management agrees with it and signs off on it. How does that make the UNION the bad guy? As I see it, BOTH parties had to agree on the sum total contract package. BOTH to me is UNION AND MANAGEMENT. So why are the UNIONS solely being blamed? I think Management is scape goating the Unions. Many civil service Unions cannot strike, so deals have to be made. To me it sounds like Management made agreements they couldn't afford. Does that make the Unions at fault? I don't think so.

People who do not belong to any of these unions swallow the rhetoric dished out by the ones who are offering up the little guys to protect their rich buddies hook line and sinker. I work in a civil service/union job and make very little money. I earned my position by scoring higher on the civil service test than most of the people who took it. It was not given to me. I never met Kate Murray, and in fact most of the people I know are doing work that should be done by higher paid titles just to keep their jobs. The lower salary is the trade off for the benefits I will earn. If I worked in the private sector I would earn higher pay and contribute more to my benefits (actually I currently don't take the benefits because my non union husband provides them for our family, I get a paltry buy back check of $500 and change twice a year). Maybe all the union people should stay home for a week or two so you can see what they do for you. You would be surprised at how we make your lives smoother on a daily basis. Stop drinking the Kool Aide and look at where the big bucks are going.

It is sad to see how people simply regurgetate headlines in the paper or talking points from politicians. FACT: Economies are cyclical. There are good periods and bad periods, some better and some worse than others. When times are good there more is more to go around for everyone and vice-versa. I work in the private sector and due to the economy I make less money today than I did 3 years ago. So I have cut back my spending. My familt does without things we had before. Thats life. The county now has less tax reveune and so they need to do the same and cut spending. It is that simple. Salaries and particularly, benfits costs (health care and pension) make up the overwhelming majority of Nassau's budget. There is really no where else to cut. However allowing govts to uniliaterrally void existing legal contracts is not the way to go. Very dangerous slippery slope. Mangano and the unions need to negotiate a new contract which better matches the county's ability to pay. In better times, new contracts can be negotiated and workers can do better.

MAria you are not accounting for the ebb and flow of an economy, technolgy, or workforce. You seem to think that because you hired someone because of a need they can never lose there job. If they are no longer necessary because the work no longer needs to be done or that technology has allowed for one to do the job of two or the worker is just lazy and you can get someone for half the cost that works twice as hard, then an employer should be allowed to fire him. If everyone left Nassau, you would still want the same number of teachers and cops regardless of the fact the ratios have changed.

They are not "breaking" the contract, they want to let people go or rollback salaries. You do realize it was the unions that broke the car manufacturers. Once they were able to renegotiate the union contracts, reduce the workforce and take advantage of robot technology they were able to turn a profit again.

Here's the rub. The mortgage tax and sales tax revenues are way off. Pension and medical costs are rising, thanks to the good work of the unions. The unions were too good; they did such a great job that we're in a deep hole. With falling County revenues, how do we pay rising pension and medical costs for the employees?

How do we raise taxes; perhaps legalizing all drugs ( heroine, cocaine, etc) and tax the heck out of it? Legalize gambling and tax the heck out of it? Legalize prostitution and tax the heck out of it? "It's a wonderful Life" without George Bailey.

Mangano goes for the other option; cut the contracts to an affordable level given today's reality.

Irene when people are old and have lived beyond their expected years, they think they know it all, remember when? Years from now when I am old and addled, I too will be like Irene. She sees the world in a broad vision that only she can see. While she collects Social Security and enjoys STAR discount and her 25% off at Mcdonald's and everyone else is having a hard time making ends meet in Nassau county she expects the young to foot the bill. She believes that she has made it to the end and does not think anyone else's opinion is important just hers and her cat Mr Muggles. She is on the winning side of the inequity and will not budge as long as she is winning. She could have changed this inequity with her grand vision when she voted for Nixon or Eisenhower but she sat passively by while the world went down hill. She had a grand vision. She was making money in the 70s when we went through this same inflation cycle and kept her head above water. She didn't care that someone else was losing just that she was winning and she's sticking to her guns 30 years later. Ahh History. How so many repeat it and wonder why it never changes.

GCRes1, the fantasy is indeed over for these public workers.. When I was a kid, I would dream about collecting my neighbors garbage for low wages.. I would fantasize about having an inmate throw semen in my face when I was caught off guard. I could only hope I would make a fraction of some of those private sector employess.. That guy sleeping in the tractor? SCREW HIM. Just because he did more work in one midnight with a jackhammer then I did in my whole life doesn't mean he can sleep on the job. As far as the ultra sarcastic post. The issue is not that they are getting paid it's the fact they are currently paid more than a doctor of medicine or a professor at a college and it's on the tax payer to give more money in taxes so they can get their guaranteed raise while the private sector has been stagnant on raises since 2005. It's the union working with the tax payers to reduce expenses for the county and give the tax payer some much needed relief. You apparently don't understand or just don't care about the people paying their increased tax bill on the same paycheck they received 3 years ago as long as the union gets their raises. Try sympathy for the Non union employee that has busted hump for the last twenty years with a stagnant pay, higher taxes and utility costs and always making less than union and then having a union guy say "hey put in more for my raise".

Remember the article Newsday printed about how much of your tax bill goes to public services?? 9%. That's right! 9% goes to when you flush your toilets, police, garbage, jails, you name it!!! If I think about it, I pay MORE for CABLEVISION than I do for police! And I wouldn't change it for a thing. I think Cablevision should charge more frankly. How else can I watch Housewives of New Jersey in high def? And jack up the school taxes while you're at it. 91% of my $12,000 tax bill is not enough.

I don't think Mangano is cutting enough quite frankly. I am tired of paying 10K a year in taxes to support these waste of salary union bubbas. Now I hear they feel that the county should raise taxes another 39% so they can continue to keep generous compensation packages? Are you kidding me? There is no way a cop or correction officer should be making a 100K + benefits BASE pay every year. They are not worth it IMHO. I am struggling just to come up with a decent down payment to replace my 17 year old car. Why? All my money is going to county taxes.

When I bought my house in the early 90's , I was paying close to 4K a year in taxes. I thought that was considerably high then.Now i pay 10K. In every county election, I always tried to look for or voted with the candidate I thought was going to lower my property taxes. Mangano was the first one I ever seen that even raised the issue during his campaign.

Base pay should be no more than 70K. Mangano is too soft. It is time we get someone in there that can really crack some heads and be tough with these unions. I want to see my taxes cut 39%, not raised.

Just because they are protesting doesn't mean they don't have a job or even that they don't make more money than you. You see it as hippie vs working which is simplistic and sophomoric. Many see it as an inequity that needs to be fixed and would like more people to hear their voice. The tide is out. The disparity has grown between public and private workers. I'm delighted for public workers doing so well. I hope all salaries, pensions and benefits keep increasing. The private employee has no back stop, except a bloodless employer. The public employee has the taxpayers as a back stop. But when public officials can't come up with any new taxes, what happens? Both the public and private sides are right, but that's not the point. The revenues are not there for continued increases. Also, the Pension Fund is in deep trouble. Go and ask Tom DiNapoli what kind of investment returns the Fund earned in the last 12 years; it's heartbreaking. It seems to me that ALL back stops are gone.

Not so fast, Frank. There are those who started with nothing and made it by very hard work, sacrifice, ingenuity and determination; taking risks that paid off. I know some guys (mostly Italians) at North Hills who went 4-5 years without a single vacation day, and who worked in their own businesses 12 hours per day, and half a day on Saturday.

There are also wealthy people who gamed the system, and are profiteers and looters, but among the North Hills crew, those creeps are few and far between.

Not all wealthy people are alike; not all poor people are alike.

J. To clarify, I work in a civil service/union job, but not tecnically for the county. Complicated I know. Our last contract gave back vacation days, a holiday and increased the health insurance portion for employees among other items. We have been working without a contact coming up on two years now. So no raises for anyone. I have said several times that someone needs to look into all the hiring of "contractors" in civil service positions at ridiculously inflated salaries, all of the people ineligible to take a civil service positions due to having already retired from the system who have been awarded waivers . All of the Nassau County jobs being given to non Nassau residents. Someone needs to find out why the NCCSC doesn't seem to mind all this circumventing of the civil service laws. The whole idea of civil service is to prevent the patronage that has so many people upset. Why are the laws in place not being adhered to????

The vast majority of us are barely making ends meet like everyone else, and are not making fat salaries. Don't lump every county or civil service worker into one category. A lot of us make less than $35000, not the $150,000 some do. I am not trying to starve your kids, don't take food away from mine. We are your neighbors, not your enemies.

The problem Cathy is that for that $35K salary the county is paying $20K in benefits. Yes your take home may be the same as someone making $35K but you also have medical coverage. Many places don't cover any or only 20% of costs for health care with no contribution to 401K. WHich means for every dollar a non union worker costs the employer a union person makes 1.6 times that.

J. You missed the part where I said I get a buy back for NOT costing my employer $20,000 since my husband's company (private sector) provides our famiy's benefits. I get $2000 a year (half every 6 months) instead of the benefits. Of course, out of that $2000 I only get $1000 and the government gets the other half in taxes. If I WAS taking the benefits, I would be paying about $100 every two weeks for the lowest level available to us. I am not sure of the pricing of the better plans since I do not need it at this time.

If you only opted out of health care you are saving residents between $1000 and $2500. Does your husband work in a tax payer funded union? A few points.... Contracts were arrived at before the fiscal problems. Nobody to blame for this. Times have changed and everyone has to suck it up equally. Unions have to give back something and it may have to be on the backs of workers recently hired or future workers. Simple math says we have to spend what we can afford. Like it or not, sick and personal time is earned, and it is available to be used by the person who earns it. It is part of their salary package. But it is not unlimited, it is earned at a set rate. As far as my job goes, if you don't use your sick time, it is paid to you when you retire up to 200 days. So I think it is better for the company to have employees use it sooner than later, when they will probably be earning a higher salary, and it willl cost the company more to pay out in retirement than do without that employee for those days during their working years. If you are complaining about money, your are off base on this one. Personal days are not accrued, we get five a year. So no one is accumulating those or taking a ton of time off on them to run a business. By the way, this is 2011. A LOT of people work two jobs or more. God Bless the hard workers and those hustling to support their families. Would you rather they worked one job and collected food stamps on your dime? Or got free health care out of your tax dollars instead of working for it? What are you actually upset about????

How about we talk about the people who do NO WORK and get all that stuff out of your pocket instead of beating up people who work every day to pay their

That whole sick pays "arrangement" needs to be eliminated. It's a scam that people accumulate so that they can cash in in their final year to boost their final year salary and game the pension payouts after retirement. Cathy makes some good points, but she misses the heart of the problem.. Where will the revenue come from to keep paying such generous benefits? There's a huge hole in the County budget. It gets filled by (1) higher taxeas); (2) employee give backs or(3) layoffs, or (4) a combination of the three.

One easy give back is the accumulation of sick days; that's unheard of in the private sector. Another easy one is contributing say 25% toward the very generous health plan; another easy one is no pensions are paid until age 62 ( excepting uniformed officers, say 58). I'm 60, and my earnings are the same as they were in 2001; how am I doing?

I believe the unions are willing to work with the county. But they are not willing to give 95% while the county only give 5%. County employees need to pay their bills too. The county employees cannot be expected to come up with all the money to solve the problems created over decades of mismanagement. There is a lot of waste that needs to be corrected before you should take money out of the pockets of the little guys. And a lot of contractors who should be replaced with civil service workers at more reasonable salaries before the guy making $30,000 takes a hit,

How many jobs could have been saved with the $2,000,000.00 Mangano threw in the toilet with his summer election? How about all the money being spent on consultants and contractors? Legal counsel? But no, take food out of the mouths of workers families first. Sure. Not every union employee is making $100,000+, in fact the majority are not. Consider that.

its not that i do not believe that a cop or a teacher should not make a 120 k salary or more. I just know we cannot afford to pay for it. If you want high pay thats fine. I agree you should be paid well. But then contributions to health and pension should be min. 50 percent not an argument about one day down the road paying 20 percent.
There was a comment in California. Paraphrasing "I am payign for two police forces the current one and the retired." It is unaffordable!! No offense to unions but stop scapegoating wall street. Wall street is wrong but that does not mean your benefits and pay are not taking advantage. Wall Street profits distracted from the issue during the 2000s. Cut government waste eliminate an excess everything a lot of automated things would reduce the police force, i.e. precincts closed and accident reports and others online. Town forms online. Payments online. Eliminate min. 10 to 20 percent of the county and town workforces. Eliminate administration in school districts and fire districts and water districts and villages. Increase contributions (keep pay but freeze it until it is average not above average). Make pay raises and bonuses not based on longevity but on performance. Build infrastructure with tax dollars and lay off unionized unnecessary workforce that refuses concessions

Merrick....I agree with you. First things first.......post the yearly activity brken down by month of all the Police Officers in the County who earned over $150,000.00 or more last year. Lets actually see what they do each day that they deserve to get paid such generous salaries. I'm not anti-police at all, but enough is enough. When does it end. In my general tax bill, taxes towards the Police Dept. and Headquarters amounted to over 33% of my tax bill. For that amount I should be getting private escorts home from my local patrol officer.

Teachers are not the problem! The problem lies in the inability to incorporate technology into the education process to lower the cost per student. We need to make out teachers more effective. J you seem to know the civil service system. Someone should do a study on how much it costs the taxpayers administratively and legally to get rid of a rotten apple protected by the civil service laws. The energy and time spent on filling out paperwork for disciplinary steps should be included.

The Civil Service Law is supposed to assure hiring based on merit not know-who. If the party boss's candidate fails to finish 1,2, or 3 on the test, he doesn't qualify; the bosses then let the list expire without hiring, and then months later come up with a new list. In the meanwhile Mr Know-who has the job conditionally. Also, it's supposed to protect the employee from arbitrary at will firing. If an employee gets on the boss's nerves, they simply eliminate the position and call it something else. Voila, our civil service system in action.

The Civil Service Law has been manipulated since its beginning, this is as old as the hills. Agreed. We ignored the problem when times were good because the rise in property taxes was matched by a rise in salary levels and then in 2008 it all went downhill. But now we've identified the problem and there seems to be enough support to fix the problem. The question is will we? We will throw the bums out or leave it as business as usual? We have an election coming up and I'll predict only 1 or 2 seats will change hands because most voters go in and click or color in the same row for the last 30 years regardless of whose running because they are a registered.......sheep.

Be careful, not all capital gains are the same. You are referring to capital gains? Hedge fund operators who work 14 hour days are taxed at the lower capital gains rate, it's a loophole called "carried interest" and it's a scam. These guys earn between$10-$100 MILLION per year, taxed at 15%. That's madness. Also, we want investors to own stocks for 2,3 or more years. For these folks, at least up to say $50,000 in gains I can agree to the discounted tax. Remember, they invest after tax dollars, and also pay income tax on the dividends. How about Nassau County starts the lay offs with:

1: Anyone who has already retired from the NY State retirement system and has been "hired back" so they can double dip.

2. Anyone who does not currently live in Nassau County.

And first get rid of all of the overpaid and over charging "consultants and contractors".

There is some change I can live with that benefits Nassau County residents, instead of canning clerks and laborers who have to keep their jobs so they can still pay taxes in Nassau County.

agreed there are 100 million in contractual obligations in the 2012 budget. Those are the consultant and contractors you are referring. Also there are 152 million in the District Attorney, Legislature and Mangano controlled expenses in the near 3.3 billion dollar 2012 proposed budget.

However this only adds up if you fire everyone in the DA, legislature, county executive, and contractual obligations of 252 million. We have over 330 million dollar shortfall next year because of pension and health care obligation rising.

This will follow the next year when you have already eliminated the only other 252 million in savings. So all that is left is 1.1 billion in union pay, comp, fringe benefits.

I recognize clerks and laborers need their jobs. They can be saved by the PBA and SOA giving in. If the SOA which makes more than near 180,000 average salary cut their salaries in half while keeping all their benefits would alone provide.

Example Robert Turk in the Nassau Police Force makes a total compensation of over 876,000 dollars. This is not middle class. The ranking senior members of the Police unions are taking this county for a ride including the dues paying members

A politician has nothing to offer his constituents with regards to union contract negotiations if he accepts a large portion of his campaign fund from unions. How can he not take care of them????? Belesi, a former member of the SOA (superior officers association) for Nassau County Police, is a legislator who just came out against the unions and said they need to give in. Clearl this tells us something because these concessions affect retired officers like Belesi. Unions the gig is up

Yes that is kinda my point. Despite being a member of the SOA, a former Nassau policeman even Belesi came out against his union brethren risking their support to make clear concessions need to be made.

Merrick7, Belesi is completely unaffected by and changes. He is retired. His pension won't change and he certainly won't give back any of his payout.
The Unions already made concessions 3 years ago. How much more should they give back?

please define said concessions. Also deferred pay is not a giveback. You still get the pay just at a later date. You save the taxpayers nothing and it costs more for us later

Heres the joke the concessions they talk of are deferred raises and longevity payments. LMAO. "the county's 10,000 CSEA employees won't get eight months of their scheduled raises and longevity payments until 2014. The same holds true for the Sheriff Officers Association." SO you get the money in 2014 all at once and it must come out of the taxpayers wallet, but instead of a gradual increase we must pay with a sharp increase all at once. That oughta chase the businesses out once and for all. Those senior citizens on fixed income are really thanking you now

in 2012, more good news in addition to deferred payments to police and detective unions from 2009, that were received this year (awesome concessions btw really saving us mondo money. Come next year, things get even worse for the budget: The county will pay out deferred wage and longevity payments to police, detectives and, twice, to superior officers, to cover work those employees did in 2009.

Its genius if you think about it, the unions claim they sacrificed but not receiving raises that year. The budget gets balanced and they get to claim they are the giving sort. Then in a few years after a couple of balanced budgets and unions claiming they have given too much. All of the sudden waves of increases and raises fill their salaries. Destroying the budget. Bankrupting Nassau's coffers forcing a huge double digit tax increase, hurting the seniors on fixed budgets, the young couples with kids, the aging couple with kids, the actual middle class workers that pay for all their benefits and 401ks on their own and have not received a raise in 10 years and its not deferred it just is not coming. Its like a freaking time bomb. THANK YOU UNIONS!! YOU DO TOO MUCH

The county has saddled itself with costly labor deals -- especially with county police officers, who earn an average of $126,000 a year, plus lavish benefits. (Nearly 400 retired Nassau cops have pensions exceeding $100,000 a year.) Also like the state, it has built up a large "structural" gap between recurring expenditures and recurring revenues.

Also in the 70 million dollar labor deal with the CSEA that Mangano and the union both bragged about: Unmentioned in the county executive's press release: the tentative contract would give CSEA members two more raises of 3.25 percent a year, pushing the expiration date to the end of 2017 from the original one signed with Suozzi for 2015

This issue is clearly not a simple or clear problem with a simple solution. It has many different dimensions to it. Some legal, others labor/management negotiated. Legal issues involve pensions. Pensions are the Law. Not easily changed or fixed and in all cases not fixed but replaced with another pension Law called a new Tier. In addition, Labor disputes and the Law and for many civlil service unions and management is eventually resolved in a process called Binging Arbitration. Believe it or not, some Arbitrators believe that a County or Agencies "ability to pay" is NOT restricted to how much cash they have to pay for the contracts. Arbitrators in the past have ruled that since the County or Agency has the ability to RAISE TAXES it cannot claim "inability to pay". Sounds crazy right? That's how it is in labor law. Not in all instances but enough. Like I said, this issues stirs a lot of discussion, but it's important to know how the process works and understand the limitations and parameters of what can and cannot be done in the immediate here and now. WE ALL CANNOT AFFORD HIGHER TAXES FROM ANY VENUE HERE ON LONG ISLAND. NOT TOWN - NOT SCHOOL. People need to speak out and use their voices at School Board meetings and just say NO MORE. In the long run it's about quality of life here on Long Island. Fight or flight from here. Seems like a simple choice. Silence will not sway the politicians, or school boards. Speak out. Loud and clear. Civily and factually.

Do You put yourself in front of a bullet every day to save thd lives of people you dont know? If you have kids, just think, i, as an officer, would without a second thought put my life on the line to save your child from harm. What is that worth to you?? It seems nothing! We want to feel good about the job we do but the reality is that tthe nassau public despises us. They wish nothing but the worst for us and hate us until they need us. Being a cop is the most thankless and difficult job in the world and despite the criticisms, i wouldnt trade it for the world. The county preys on ignorance and wants the public to believe that taxes are high due to police and that is so untrue. Do the research, dont just listen to corrupt polititians. We earn EVERY DIME because my life is as priceless as i think yours is.
