Who Needs St. Patrick's Day When There's St. Patrick's Week?

Sullivan's Quay hosts week-long St. Patrick's Day celebration.

Most of the Sullivan's Quay staff, including owner Brian Barry, are from Ireland. Although they are thousands of miles from home, Barry, who has recreated an upscale Irish pub on Port Washington Boulevard, wanted to make sure local residents get their "fill" for St. Patrick's Day.

Instead of celebrating on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, Sullivan's Quay will be hosting a week-long St. Patrick's Day celebration, filled with live music, drink specials and authentic Irish entrees.

World-renowned guitarist Victor Cunneen will be performing 7:30 p.m. on March 11 and March 12. Cuneen has performed for 35 years across Europe and the United States and has been a regular performer at Sullivan's Quay for the past 10 years. Cuneen will be playing the guitar and singing favorite Irish tunes.

Only One Joe, a Port Washington rock band that plays regularly at Sullivan's Quay, will perform on March 13 at 10 p.m. Since the band members are Irish, they too will be performing Irish songs.

The entertainment continues with live Irish Step Dancing on Sunday and Monday. The Donny Golden School of Irish Dance will be performing group numbers and solos at 7 p.m. on March 14 and 7:30 p.m. on March 15. Donny Golden, the school's owner, said his dancers will perform selections of reels, jigs, slip jigs, set dances and ceili dances.

Golden said his dancers perform regularly and often participate in competitions, but these performances will be exciting for his students. "We have shows every weekend in March in different locations around the city and on Long Island," Golden said. "This will be a good experience for them."

Billy Coleman and Pat Floody, new additions to this year's St. Patrick's Day lineup, will be playing Irish songs on the guitar and accordion from 6-10 p.m. on March 16. The two will also perform on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, from 12-3 p.m. and 6-10 p.m. featuring Irish Step Dancing at 2 p.m.

There will be lunch and dinner specials served on St. Patrick's Day as well, including Dublin Wings, Corned Beef 'n' Cabbage, and Lamb and Guinness Stew. Sullivan's Quay will also be serving special drinks like green beer and Grasshopper (crème de menthe and brandy) throughout the week-long celebration.

Catherine O'Neill, manager at Sullivan's Quay for the past five years, put it simply. "Sullivan's Quay is the best place on Long Island to celebrate St. Patrick's Day."
