Bettye LaVette Rocks the Landmark

Humble performer describes herself as 'an overnight success that took 50 years to happen.'

At an age when many are thinking about retirement, Bettye LaVette is just hitting her stride. LaVette’s phenomenal performance at Landmark on Main Street on Feb. 4, proved that, beyond a shadow of a doubt. Those who were fortunate enough to get tickets for this particular concert witnessed a show unlike any other. LaVette, 66, recorded her first album at age 16. However, her career largely stalled, and although she made music steadily throughout the decades, it wasn’t until the release of her 2005 CD, “Got My Own Hell to Raise” that she first received the acclaim she was due. LaVette specializes in reinterpreting other musicians’ songs in her own inimitable style. “Got My Own Hell to Raise” was a cover album of songs all written by other …

North Hempstead Town Notebook: Celebrations Planned

Black History Month, a Polar Plunge and Jazzy Night are on the schedule.

Supervisor Jon Kaiman, Town Clerk Leslie Gross, the North Hempstead Town Board have announced the third annual Valentines Day Marriage Vow Renewal ceremony at Harbor Links Golf Course in Port Washington. “We are so happy to be able to celebrate the love the couples married over 50 years have shared during their long lasting marriages,” said Gross, who conceived the event. “Perhaps the most important business of life is to learn how to love!”  About 70 couples from across the town who have been married for 50 years or more are expected to recommit themselves to each other at the Feb. 14 ceremony themed “Over the Years, Flying High.” The celebration kicks off at 11 a.m. ***  Kaiman, Councilwoman Viviana Russell and the North Hempstead Town …

Port Actor Co-Stars with Actor Eric Roberts

Port Washington Actor Dan Brennan, usually known for his award-winning comedy movie roles and TV commercials, takes on a new challenge as an action hero, Police Sergeant Tommy Cavanaugh in Fred Carpenter's new independent film "The Night Never Sleeps." Brennan shares the silver screen in several scenes with actor Eric Roberts and his wife Eliza Roberts. In the scenes, Roberts' character is confronted by Brennan's character Cavanaugh, who is trying to track down a cop killer. Roberts joked that the role "scared him," since in his words "I don't play dangerous people." Then he admitted that it was a fun role. Roberts' wife Eliza plays Cavanaugh's wife in the film and says it was fun to work with Dan in her scenes. This gritty style police …

Mark Ballas Wows a Young Crowd at Landmark

'Dancing with the Stars' performer proves he can do more than dance.

It was a different crowd than usual at Landmark on Main Street on Friday, Jan. 27. Giggling teen girls (and their moms) in tank tops and sequins comprised a good percentage of the audience. But the giggling swiftly turned to shrieking as Mark Ballas took the stage. Ballas is best known as one of the professional dance partners on the hit TV show, Dancing With the Stars, where he’s scored the coveted mirror ball trophy twice. The son of two professional dancers – Corky and Shirley Ballas – it made sense that the younger Ballas would become a dancer. However, his talents extend beyond dance – Ballas is a trained musician and singer whose debut CD, "HurtLoveBox," was released last year. Some musicians have managed to make the crossover from …

I too attended the show & am proud to say that I got up to dance during Mark's final song....AND NO, I am NOT a teenage girl - I'm 39! In fact all of the WOMEN (not girls) who were dancing were 24 & over.
