Port Washington one photo at a time.
What better way to celebrate Port Washington's diversity then a World Festival Day? Held at both the Port Washington Public Library and Landmark on Main Street, residents turned out for an afternoon of culture, dance, music, crafts and tastings.  Visitors were also treated to live music, including the sounds of Cuban Klezmer Quartet featuring Roberto Rodriguez (see video). Afterward there was Bollywood dancing. 
A cell tower in Manhasset Isle continues to grab headlines as residents and Manorhaven officials press AG Towers to find an alternate site. 
A Port Washington Girl Scouts Cadette troop recently earned its cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automatic external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification at The DeMatteis Center in Old Brookville through their community classes program.   During this session, 15 cadettes "learned valuable life saving skills while having a great time," said Ginny D'Alonzo-Sikes, who leads Troop 432 at St. Peters Parish. The troop is a member of the Port Washington Girl Scout's service team, and D'Alonzo-Sikes said, aims to "help promote the St. Francis Hospital's commitment to educating the community so that …
There was plenty of corned beef, cabbage, potatoes and carrots at the Port Washington Senior Citizens Center on Thursday. And did we mention Irish soda bread? Board member Carl Lalena, 86, baked 12 loaves for the occassion. Also on tap: a rendition of "Danny Boy."

Eighty couples gathered at North Hempstead’s Harbor Links Golf Course clubhouse on Valentine’s Day to renew their wedding vows. These couples have been married 50 years or more.  North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman and Town Clerk Leslie Gross presided over the ceremony, which was followed by a buffet luncheon reception.

They are the building blocks of life – at least the life of any 6-year-old. Legos represent childhood creativity and fun at its most open-ended. But New York-based artist Nathan Sawaya takes child’s play and elevates it to an exhibition-worthy statement at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn.  The contemporary artist has five Lego set pieces featured at “Nathan Sawaya: Recent Works,” open now through March 18, 2012. The Nassau County Museum of Art in Rosyln Harbor is presenting three new exhibitions in its galleries through Nov. 27, including work by the famed Spanish artist Francisco Goya. The Board of Trustees hosted a preview reception on Friday, Sept. 16, for members and their guests to view etchings by Goya along with works by Rimer Cardillo, a prominent Uruguayan American artist and a group exhibit titled "Exploraciones Contemporaneas," featuring Latin American artists.   Goya, a Spanish romantic painter, is considered a bridge between the old masters and the modern artists. The Pride in Port Parade extravaganza marched along Main Street for its 23rd year on Saturday to the delight of the crowds. What's a parade without a police motorcade, fire trucks, scouts, students, teachers, parents, dogs, martial artists, dancing librarians, polititians, mascots, firefighters, a Hall of Fame caravan, veterans, a marching band and a grand Marshal? This year's parade was all that and much more. Did we mention men in kilts and women too? After the end of the parade folks made their way over to Weber Middle School for a Family Fun Day.
It was a storm like no other. The threat of a hurricane sent Long Islanders scrambling for supplies and to secure property. Then the fear of flooding forced some to evacuate. And finally Hurricane Irene hit Long Island early Sunday. Port Washington weathered the storm mostly intact. Trees and power lines fell. There was flooding. Temperatures reached the century mark during the "Growing Up At Manorhaven Park Reunion Encore." Still, that didn't keep away the crowds that came from all points on the compass to reminisce about the wonderful times that they spent together. Live music from local bands, friends from near and far along with barbecues and picnics combined to make a memorable reunion. 
Port Washington's business district takes on a different perspective when viewed from high atop the roof of an architectural icon – the restored Bayles Pharmacy Building located on the corner of Main Street and Shore Road in the antiques and arts hub of town. Glimpses of the harbor and residential areas can also be seen through the greenery.  
Children had the chance to learn more about music, thanks to the "instrument petting zoo" presented by Wright Music. The event took place just prior to Port Washington Summer Community Band at Sunset Park on Friday evening.
Seniors from every corner of the town of North Hempstead flocked to North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington for a welcome back to the weekly summer series FunDay Mondays at the Beach. Enthusiastic seniors packed their satchels with sunglasses, sunscreen, snacks, scrabble sets, sundries and smiles for a sunsational day socializing in the shade and strolling along the sunny beachfront promenade. Joining in the fun were officials from the Town of North Hempstead who came to help kick-off the opening event. Each Monday will feature a different theme including games, entertainment, exercise…
Picture this innovative learning complex filled with happy, inquisitive children exploring nature while romping around in this unique "green" space set withing the oasis of the Sands Point Preserve. The Children's Discovery Center is projected to open in mid -summer as soon as the interior of the nature exploration classroom area is completed. Indoor educational programs will be given in the building that was once a posh kennel for the Guggenheim canines.
