Please join us for the first 2012 meeting of the Port Washington Voice.  We are a new, grass-roots group of Port Washington residents who have come together to discuss and develop ways to protect and strengthen our Town's unique character and quality of life.  This Saturday we plan to discuss the pros and cons of the "Model Blocks Program" proposed by the Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington and the Town of North Hempstead. Model Blocks includes beautification suggestions for Main Street, such as brick sidewalks and improved storefronts, which we support.  However, their proposal also includes the rezoning of Upper Main Street for 4 stories of mixed use, which concerns many of us and our neighbors.  We would like to hear your view.

Our meeting will be held Saturday, January 14, 10-11:30 AM at the Firehouse at 12 Haven Avenue in Port Washington.  If you have further questions about the meeting or about the Port Washington Voice, please contact Frank Scobbo at 516-369-6257, send an email to Laura Shabe at portwashingtonvoice@gmail.com, or visit us at www.portwashingtonvoice.org.  Hope to see you Saturday!

More About Port Washington Fire Department/Flower Hill Hose Company No. 1 Headquarters "Company #3 Mainhouse"

Located next to the Port Washington Long Island Rail Road station,
this building servers as headquarters to PWFD's other "Engine Company."

Interesting Fact:
This building recently finished an extensive renovation project designed to accommodate the company's growth and newer, larger fire apparatus. The original firehouse dated back to the early 1900s.

I am looking forward to this meeting.

I believe all residents in Port are supportive of the beautification ideas presented in the Model Blocks proposal, but rezoning to allow 4 stories of mixed use is where Residents and ToNH lost support of the majority of the community. Eliminate the 4-story rezoning part of the proposal, and only include truly beautification ideas and the proposal will find much more support.

See you next Saturday.

Thank you to all those in attendance on Saturday.

RFMBPW presented an updated Model Blocks proposal that differed somewhat from the Nov. 17 proposal. And even with the revisions, the reaction to the Model Blocks proposal was overwhelmingly negative. Once again, the Port Washington community has made it very clear that we do not support rezoning in the Model Block area.

It is now time for RFMBPW to rethink the Model Block proposal and present a plan that does not include rezoning...Main Street can survive (and thrive) without rezoning.
