Relay For Life: Art Beating Cancer

This year, fourth quarter Weber Middle School art students and their parents supported the American Cancer Society through the Art Beating Cancer program in conjunction with Port Washington’s Relay for Life on June 15.

All students received official Art Beating Cancer bags in Ms. Wright's art class, which were either illustrated to honor loved ones or decorated with words of inspiration for members of their community. Parents of the students were asked to “purchase” their children’s bags (though not mandatory, so that no student would be excluded). Together, they pulled together to raise over $700 towards the battle against cancer.

The luminaries will be placed along Schreiber High School’s relay track on June 15, the evening of our Relay For Life. Their lights (representing hope for a cure for cancer) will illuminate the path for all who are participating in the relay. The bags are lit up during the “remembrance” portion of the relay, when participants walk a silent lap to reflect and remember loved ones lost to cancer, and honor those who are still fighting. The power of this ceremony lies in providing an opportunity for people to share their grief and find hope.  Many view the lighting of the luminaries as “the most poignant moment” of the Relay for Life.

Michele Hyde, the luminaria event chair for Port Washington, has agreed to set the students’ luminary bags in a "special section", so on the day of relay they will be able to find their art project easily.  These students are proud to have done their part to keep the flame of hope alive until the day comes when we have conquered cancer.   All are encouraged to participate in Port’sRelay so the community can acknowledge and thank you for your support!

Opening ceremonies for Saturday's Relay for Life will be held at 7 p.m., the with a survivor/caregiver lap and reception at 8 p.m. and the luminaria lighting Ceremony at 9 p.m. Also look for performances by the Salem School Choir and local rock band, Lil Sammy and the Funked Up Daddies, the PWFD's Barbecue at 10 p.m., raffles, terrific prizes, a giant Jenga contest and lots more!
