Some 800 members of the Port Washington community participated in the 12th annual Relay for Life cancer event, raising an $97,000 (and counting) for vital cancer research, advocacy, education and support services.

Event highlights included the much anticipated move back to the Schreiber track from Sousa Elementary School, an all survivor Color Guard from the PWFD, 20 Port coaches lining the stage to receive certificates for being, 'Coaches-who-Care' by raising awareness and funds with their student athletes throughout the school year, the Salem Elementary School Chorus under the direction of Allison Friedman, opening remarks by schools Superintendent Kathleen Mooney, Schreiber Principal, Ira Pernick and Board Of Education President, Karen Sloan, an opening ceremony that featured for the first time, student cancer survivors (two Schreiber grads and one Schreiber student), a luminaria ceremony featured another Schreiber grad and celebrated author, radio-show host and behavioral scientist, Dr. Steve Maraboli, local rock legends, Lil' Sammy and the Funked Up Daddies and bag pipers to lead the way around the track as the Luminaria were lit in memory of or in honor of someone special.

This was a true coming together of the Port community - a win-win for all involved!
