This Could Be The Start of Something....bad

This could be the start of something…..not good.

“Our true genius is compromise; our whole gov’t is founded on it” Shelby Foote

Just a quick note, as I have been trying to sort some of this out in my head. Forgetting your feelings about the Affordable Health Care Law, please remember that no matter what anyone says, it passed as much muster as any law can…it passed both houses of Congress, was signed by The President, and even passed what is becoming an increasingly conservative Supreme Court. The president then stood for re-election on the bill, against a candidate whose stated goal was to have it repealed on his first day in office had he won…and he was re-elected…handily. So really, Obama doesn’t have to negotiate, and he is right not to this time. He won this battle.  So, to all of those that claim to want to follow the Constitution you must surely understand that this entire process has worked exactly as it was designed to. So, whether you like the law or not, it’s the law. And as no alternative has been put forth, save the catch-all “free market” solution, which is kind of what we had, and kind of why we needed something to be done. Is the law perfect? Heck no… there were far too many concessions in it... is it better than what we have now? Heck yeah.  I say to those that get their information from less than unbiased sources that are complaining about having to “pay for other people”…what the heck do you think you’re doing now? When someone goes into the emergency room when they have a cold…guess who pays for that?  So logistical concerns aside for a moment, let’s look at a potentially larger problem. We hear the phrase slippery slope a lot in our hyperbole driven world.  Well my friends, this could indeed be one now.

Let’s call this for what it is, a hijacking of the legislative process…we have a portion of one party of one house of our Congress basically holding up the works in a fit because… (The reasons vary, depending on who is asked) of whatever it is. The fact is, no matter the reason, they are pitching a fit…and an unconstitutional fit at that. But let’s extrapolate a bit, shall we? And what I am about to present…if you want to be true to the truth…is not an unlikely scenario, given both recent and not so recent history.

It is a matter of public record that there was huge opposition to both Social Security and Medicare. Both we derided as socialism when they were proposed, passed and signed into law. And in the last election cycle, and indeed during the previous administration, a call went up to dismantle both programmes and to privatise them. No soap. But if the group holding up the works now gets what they want…what’s to stop them from trying it on other laws that have passed all constitutional requirements?  They couldn’t get what they wanted at the polls, (a telling sign that is, by the way!) so they’ll just hold their breath until they do. So we couldn’t get Medicare eradicated…no worries, we’ll just not do ANYTHING until that happens. And if it works for them you just know then that the other guys will do the same thing till they get what they want. This is what we’ve become; this is what passes for governing now. A bunch of grown men and women folding their arms, stamping their feet and holding their breath…unfortunately for the country…not for long enough.
