Friends of Sands Point Preserve Presents
“Celtic Celebration” on March 16
On the eve of Saint Patrick’s Day, Friends of the Sands Point Preserve will present the “Celtic Celebration” concert with a hearty Irish buffet dinner on March 16, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. in Castlegould’s beautiful Great Hall; the music series continues with “A Starry Night of Cabaret” on April 6, 2013, with a Gold-Coast-inspired seated dinner. Each event revives the original Guggenheim Estate’s tradition of music-filled evenings with fine dining and socializing among friends.
“Celtic Celebration” honors the music and dance and culinary traditions of a remarkable centuries-old culture. The Foot and Fiddle Dance Company is renowned for their expertise in Irish Step Dance, American Square Dancing, Tap, Clogging as well as Country, Bluegrass, Swing, Cajun, and Rock & Roll music – they will perform throughout the evening, under the direction of Pat Cannon. Among the dances to be shared is the Irish “Ceili Dance” which is the root of American Square Dancing.
The evening begins at 7:00 p.m. with signature cocktails and dinner; at 8:00 p.m., the performance begins, followed by a mini-lesson for willing participants. Dessert will be served after the performance, and music and dancing will continue throughout the evening for all guests who are sure to enjoy the event whether or not they take to the dance floor. According to the New York Times, “An evening with Foot & Fiddle guarantees a good time for dancers and audience alike.”
Among the exceptional cast of four dancers and five musicians are fiddler/mandolinist Dennis Blake and guitarist/pianist/vocalist Bill Bell who specialize in traditional Irish music ranging from lively jigs and reels to favorite Irish songs. Fiddler Patrick Mangan is a two-time All-Ireland fiddle champion; he appeared in “Riverdance” on Broadway and in prestigious venues around the globe, becoming the youngest fiddle player in the show’s history.
According to Jean-Marie Posner, Vice Chair of the Friends of the Sands Point Preserve, “We are thrilled to bring Foot & Fiddle back to the Preserve for a second performance – the first time celebrating American Country Dance – and this time, celebrating its roots in Irish Dancing. Our audiences for cultural programs are growing with each and every event, so we are very happy to develop a range of offerings not only in the types of performances but also in the dining experience.”
Tickets are $100 per person - these include the concert and dancing, signature cocktails, dinner, and dessert catered by Philip Stone. A 10% discount is offered for purchases to both performances, and groups of six or more receive a 10% discount for one show and a 20% discount for both performances.
The concerts take place in Castlegould’s Great Hall; this 5,000-squre-foot space was completely renovated – from floor to ceiling – with a new HVAC system, gorgeous granite and cherry wood flooring, resurfaced and freshly painted walls and ceilings as well as new chandeliers and dramatic drapes highlighting the room’s enormous windows. The room is now an elegant, warm, and versatile entertainment space. Guests will be seated at cabaret-style tables of four and six – and the adjacent “Club G” hall will house the dinner and dessert buffet as well as additional tables for dining.
