An Evening Inspired by James Bond

Benefiting Arts & Cultural Programs

Friends of the Sands Point Preserve is proud to present The Gold Gala – an Evening Inspired by James Bond – at the Sands Point Preserve on Saturday, May 4, 2013, 7:00 to midnight at Hempstead House.  This year’s Preservers’ Celebration benefits year-round Arts and Cultural Programs for adults and children – and supports the Friends’ vision to develop multigenerational creative arts and music performances that honor the Guggenheim’s extraordinary cultural legacy.

According to Friends Chair Karli Hagedorn, “We are taking a new approach to this year’s gala event – it’s going to be a really exciting night of Bond mystery and intrigue – including the “Gouldfinger Girls” – we might even see a few infamous villains…” The evening features music and dancing, signature cocktails, and a phenomenal dinner and dessert buffet by Philip Stone Caterer in the opulent setting of this original Gold Coast mansion.

Friends’ programming for Family Nature Education as well as Visual and Performing Arts has continuously expanded over the last five years, and highlights of upcoming events in the latter category include fine arts workshops and lectures; a Chinese art and sculptures exhibition; the Jewel Box Summer Opera Series; a Summer Music Festival on the Great Lawn; Sizzling Jazz Concerts and Starry Nights of Cabaret in Castle Gould’s Great Hall, historic mansion tours, and the Design House International Showcase at Hempstead House in the fall of 2013.

The Gold Gala honorees are Edie Katz, Patrick J. Gannon, PhD, and Nancy Kheck, PhD – also known as the “BeeWhisperers of the Gold Coast” for their extensive honeybee research and educational programs in a time of global crisis for honeybee colonies.   Ms. Katz has served the community through her leadership roles in many organizations, including the Sands Point Garden Club, the Port Washington Library Foundation Board, Temple Beth Israel and the Nassau County Museum of Art; she is currently a real estate broker with Laffey Fine Homes.

Dr. Gannon is the Chair of the Department of Science Education at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine with a background in Anthropology and Neurobiology at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.  His groundbreaking study on language areas in chimpanzee brains published in the international journal “Science” supported the work of his lifetime hero Dr. Jane Goodall.

Dr. Kheck’s expertise spans Biology, Chemistry, Neurobiology, Neuropsychopharmacology, and, while affiliated with Mount Sinai Medical Center, she and her husband, Dr. Gannon, created an innovative K-12 science education curriculum on Space Biomedical Research and the work of NASA scientists.  Dr. Kheck’s many projects range from Continuing Medical Education symposia, design of STEM initiatives, and, currently, the Zarb MBA program at Hofstra University with a focus on the healthcare industry.

With Ms. Katz’s support, Dr. Gannon, Dr. Kheck, and Friends Executive Director Jean-Marie Posner initiated the very successful BeeWhispering program at the Preserve – and three of his North Shore LIJ School of Medicine students will receive an Award of Distinction: A.J. Blood, Branson Sparks, and Matthew Katz in recognition of their volunteer work at the Preserve, including their excellent presentations at the bee apiary for visiting school groups.

“We created the apiary and the BeeWhispering educational program to support local honeybee colonies and encourage their beneficial effects on our environment," according to Jean-Marie Posner, "Our goal is to educate the community about the importance of preserving honeybees through the ‘colony collapse’ epidemic that is having a disastrous affect on the species.  We are very grateful to all of our honorees for the tremendous work they done have to establish this important program at the Preserve.”

With this event, the Friends of the Sands Point Preserve hopes to engage a new generation of patrons who enjoy and support the cultural arts.  Individual tickets for the Gold Gala are $200 per person, and Gold Gala donors at the $1,550 level and higher will also receive Program Sponsorship credits for performing arts and educational programs that take place throughout the year.  For more information and to purchase tickets, packages and tribute advertisements in the beautiful journal publication, The Gold Journal – The Friends’ Mission Advances, please see http://thesandspointpreserve.com/performing-arts/the-gold-gala/ or call (516) 571-7901, email info@friendsspp.org, or stop by the Gate House at 127 Middle Neck Road in Sands Point, New York, open daily.
