'La Bohème' at Sands Point Preserve

Friends of Sands Point Preserve Presents “La Bohème” on August 11 at 7:00 pm and a Free Performance on August 12 at 3:00 pm.

The Summer Music Series at the Sands Point Preserve will feature two performances of the magnificent tragic opera “La Bohème” this weekend: Saturday, August 11 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, August 12 at 3 p.m. – the matinee will be a special free performance to encourage young audiences to experience opera in the magical setting of historic Hempstead House.

“There are many ways to enjoy the Preserve,” Friends of the Sands Point Preserve Vice-Chair Jean-Marie Posner stated, “from the beautiful natural woods and shoreline to the historic mansions to our educational programming for families – the opera and all of the performing arts programs are just one aspect of what we offer the community. We saw the extraordinary response of children in the audience of ‘The Barber of Seville’ in July, so we wanted to find a way to make ‘La Bohème’ accessible for the entire community.”

The special matinee performance also celebrates young artists in our community by providing an opportunity for them to perform in the opera’s orchestra and chorus.  The families of these young performers are all invited to attend.

The Palm Court of Hempstead House will be transformed into the struggling artists’ Parisian garret – inhabited by Mimi (Hannah Rosenbaum), and her lover Rudolfo (Adam Cromer).  Their bohemian friends will be performed by Mary Petro (Musetta) and Adelmo Guidarelli (Marcello). The music of Giacomo Puccini’s great classic opera is heartrending – and often surprisingly familiar.  Even the youngest children can respond to this music – and begin to love the opera.

The evening event includes cocktails and dinner at 7 p.m.; performance at 8 p.m., followed by dessert and coffee.  The tickets are $80 for a single ticket; $75 per ticket for four or more tickets; and youth tickets for ages 10 to 17 are $30.  The matinee is free after the $10-per-car entrance fee to the Preserve; admission to the Preserve is free with an Annual Pass.  Tickets can be purchased by calling 516-571-7901 and at the Gate House daily from 8:00 a.m.to 7:00 pm – at 127 Middle Neck Road in Sands Point.

Friends of the Sands Point Preserve is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with the mission to protect and preserve the 216-acre waterfront grounds and historic mansions and to provide educational programs for families and schools in the new Phil Dejana Learning Center and Outdoor Classroom.

Congratulations Adina! Well deserved.

Because of her outstanding work, Adina has been promoted to a new position at Patch. She has takenRead More on more of a regional role, but you will still get to enjoy much of her work here in Port Washington.

I hope the closing is only temporary. I purchased milk and other items from Dairy Barn for manyRead More years. Always got good quality products. Never had a problem.
Nassau Taxpayer May 23, 2013 at 03:55 pm
With the loss of "D-Barn", the lack of a drive-through convenience store creates a voidRead More worth filling.

There was very little publicity about the budget this year. I was disappointed that the increase wasRead More over 3.5 percent. We still haven't addressed the salary issues and maybe we never will. Until the salary and benefit package is decreased, there will never be a reduction in the cost of education in Port Washinton.
NYB May 23, 2013 at 03:33 pm
What does it matter? No matter what you do, the budget increase will pass. Just empty your pocketsRead More and move on.

Historically, that was a problem with "NO" voters...

if we are going to sell off our 40 spot lot why not advocate for the LIRR to chip in and helpRead More building the 2 or 3 story parking lot on Haven? with more trains and more population we need more parking. we are fooling ourselves that this is not a "Hicksville" type train station. we are a main hub and it needs a substantial parking lot that will help commuter parking and help retail parking in the main lots off of main street. anyone who does not want that parking lot built needs to really ask themselves why not. if we can build a new car wash on a main cut through street for no reason we can get this done with the same traffic nightmares!!! BTW during construction which im sure will take at least a year. where will those people park? in the other lots, so us who take the 808 train will get screwed bc we will not have a place to park now.
Nassau Taxpayer May 23, 2013 at 12:52 pm
Good spot for a multi-story municipal/LIRR garage, given the height of terrain behind it.
Bob May 20, 2013 at 06:28 pm
I agree. This lot should be open all the time. Maybe there is a potential liability issue butRead More let's see if it can be worked out.

A 135 million dollar budget with another 5 million+ assured for next year, teachers have to buyRead More "school supplies" in Port Washington? Are you kidding?
