Yuka Imata Portrait Demonstration at Art League of Nassau County

The Art League of Nassau County invited award- winning professional artist, Yuka Imata to demonstrate an oil painting at the Friday, March 22nd meeting.

Imata photographed many steps in a painting she did ahead of time, along with written commentary. Xeroxes of this photographed instruction booklet were handed out to the audience at the beginning of the ALNC demo Friday. Imata posed the same model as in the hand- outs.

The audience was treated to a step-by-step demonstration on how to paint a portrait. Starting with a toned canvas, Imata sketched an accurate likeness of the model using vine charcoal. She added a thin layer of paint lines on top of the sketch. Imata carefully blocked in the shadows and highlights without blending. Then she added local color with refinement of shapes. The last step Yuka used a fan brush to gently blend most areas.

Art League of Nassau County president, Tim Savage said, "Yuka Imata's step-by-step demonstration was clear instruction on how to build a portrait. It was exciting to watch the work develop over the course of an hour or so. It's really an experience to watch a beautiful painting develop and follow the artist's explanation of their technique."

Yuka Imata graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. She continued her education at the Art Students League and then painted in Italy and Spain. Imata has won numerous major awards, including one from the Allied Artists of America, the Salmagundi Club, the Art Students League and more. Her work has appeared in over 10 publications such as American Artist Magazine (April 2009) and Plein Air Magazine (December/January 2013). Yuka currently teaches at the Jackson Heights Art Club.
