"Fall Art Show" by Chezar Art Studio

Sheila Chezar- Hershkowitz, founder of Chezar Art Studio announced that the studio's "Fall Art Show" will take place at the Merrick Public Library during the month of November. In addition, all residents are invited to an opening reception on Sunday, November 3rd from 1 pm to 4 pm in the gallery. Refreshments will be served.

The show will feature paintings and drawings of the 13 talented artists and students who have attended the studio since its grand opening in November 2012. The work of the following are included: Teachers Sheila Chezar-Hershkowitz and Suzanne Young from Halesite are accompanied by students Suzie Alvey of Garden City, Katerina Bakke of Merrick, Peggy Bayern of Hicksville, Renee Bundi of Port Washington, Pearl Cohen of Massapequa, Aggie Cutrone of Bellmore, Emmy Davis of Bellmore, Lenore Friedman from Merrick, Jena Heneghan from Point Lookout, Brianna Perillo of Bethpage and Peter Zappa from North Bellmore.

Sheila Chezar-Hershkowitz said, "I grew up in a wonderful environment of creativity and had an understanding of our cultural ties to the world. My dream is to share this love of art, creativity, and culture with the community and its young people, who though my studio can be excited by art and art history. I will also plan to take trips to cultural events and museums in  New York City throughout the year, to further engage young artists."

Chezar-Hershkowitz received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City. As a young artist she attended the Art Students League in Manhattan and studied with highly-acclaimed artists such as Chuck Close and Harvey Dinnerstein. She also attended the Woodstock Summer School in Woodstock, NY and studied under Jon deMartin. In recent years Sheila was a student at the Art League of Long Island, studying under Suzanne Young. In 2012, she founded Chezar Art Studio in Bellmore, Long Island.

Sheila works with various mediums with a heavy concentration on portraits. Her work is beautifully drawn rendering with color and emotion, realism with whimsy.

Suzanne Young is an art teacher at Chezar Art Studio with an extensive background. She has studied at the Ecole, Rue des Bons Enfants, Academie De La Grande Chaumere in Paris, the Cooper Union in New York and the Art Students League in New York with four scholarships. She has also studied with Mary Rose Palau, PSA; John Frederick Murray; Robert Brackman, PSA; David Leffel and Aaron Shikler, NA.

Suzanne has exhibited at many New York area galleries and museums, including the National Arts Club, Salmagundi Club, National Academy of Design, Northport Galleries, Heckscher Museum, Gallery North and the Nassau County Museum.

Ms. Young has taught at several places in the area in addition to Chezar Art Classes. Some are the Art League of Long Island since 1984, Nassau County Office of Cultural Development in Chelsea Center, Life- Long Learning with Nassau Community College and others. From 1996 to the present, she has taught in workshops in the Islip Art Museum, the Jacqueline Penney Studio in Cutchogue in addition to the Pastel Society of America. Her work has been published in The Best of Pastel and American Artist Magazine.

Students in the month-long show include:

1. Freelance artist, Suzie Alvey whose portraits in oil and pastel have won awards in local art shows, including the Art League of Nassau County;

2. Katerina Bakke, a student at Nassau Community College who won second place in the Hernando County's Art in the Park, Spring Hill, Florida;

3. Peggy Bayern, a retired mathematics teacher and computer programmer/analyst who loves to paint portraits of her family;

4. Renee Bundi, an award-winning tablet app designer and producer with Time, Inc. who paints landscapes;

5. Pearl Cohen, who enjoys painting landscapes in oils;

6. Aggie Cutrone, who has rediscovered her passion for painting after working in information technology for the last 30 years;

 

7. Emmy Davis, a special education teacher for 30 years in New York City, who feels art is now a huge part of her life;

 

8. Lenore Friedman, a retired nursery teacher who has studied with Phyllis George at BOCCA, Babylon and with Suzanne Young for over 20 years;

 

9. Jena Heneghan, a junior at Holy Trinity High School who would like to major in art therapy in college;

 

10. Brianna Perillo, a high school student who would like to "do something in the fashion industry, like fashion design" and

11. Peter Zappa, a sixth grader who is currently learning to paint with watercolors and likes to create sculptures from household materials. 

 

The Merrick Public Library is located at 2279 Merrick Avenue in Merrick.
