Port Washington Hosts Second Annual Night of 1,000 Strings Concert

In what made for a riveting showcase of musical talent, student-musicians in the Port Washington School District recently dazzled family, faculty and administrators with a variety of tunes during the district’s second annual Night of 1,000 Strings concert.

The event, held in the Paul D. Schreiber High School gymnasium, featured more than 300 students, ranging from grades four through 12.

The Elementary Strings Orchestra, which encompassed fourth- and fifth-grade students from all five elementary schools, was led by conductor Nicole Brunetto. Songs included “French Folk Song” and “Lightly Row,” both traditional pieces.

The Middle School Strings Orchestra was led by conductors Carol Garofalo and Diane Fish. Ms. Garofalo directed students during their version of “Eleanor Rigby” by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, while Ms. Fish instructed the orchestra during their performance of “Finale Symphony No. 2 in C” by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Ms. Garofalo also directed the High School Strings Orchestra, which performed “Capriol Suite for String” by Peter Warlock.

For the evening’s grand finale, led by conductor Anthony Pinelli Jr., all strings orchestras came together to perform “Wind Through Time Port Washington” by Deborah Baker Monday.

HEARTS, a non-profit organization that supports, promotes and enriches the arts in Port Washington and its public schools, funded the commissioning of the original musical piece written by Ms. Monday for the district.
