On Thursday we asked Port Washington Patch Facebook readers to comment on "It's a new year, and a chance for improvements. What changes do you want to see in Port Washington in 2014?"

In less than 24 hours, the numerous responses were quick and varied, with several unique ideas introduced.

Topping the list of Port Washington recommendations was pet initiatives, better bicycle lanes, business suggestions, children's activities and safety concerns.

Here are some of Port's wishes for the new year:
  • A gym like NYSC or Planet Fitness.
  • Reduced speed limit on Port Washington Boulevard near the middle school.
  • Add bicycle lanes throughout town.
  • A place to get children's clothes and accessories in Port.
  • Allow dogs in park areas.
  • Expand the Landmark Teen Center to include all teens in town and address their interests and hobbies.
  • Start a baby-sitting co-op.
  • Promote a ride-share program.
  • Structure a paddle boarding regata.
  • Two more crossing guards. One on Willowdale and South Bayles and Vanderventer and Bayles in the morning and afternoon.
  • Better bike lanes and more town pride on Port Boulevard.
  • Make Main Street more appealing to attract new businesses.
  • Offer a teen center annex uptown closer the Port Boulevard so kids have easier access.
  • Stop approving the same types of business!
  • A more pet-friendly town.
  • Restaurants with outside good-weather seating so people may bring their dogs.
Did we miss something? Keep the suggestions coming in the comments section.

Dogs should be allowed in parks, but there should be stiff fines for leaving poop. In Queens, or any part of NYC, dogs can run off-leash in parks between 9:00 PM and 9:00 AM. It works very well. An indoor pool would be wonderful. Neighbors who could actually keep to the 30 MPH speed limit on Port Blvd.

Port is a great town, but certainly there are some great ideas listed for improvements above. Outdoor seating at restaurants would be very nice and I love dogs (we have a wonderful family dog), but dogs eat from a bowl on the floor in your home kitchen, not at restaurants or just outside of restaurants -- thankfully!

Resolve the train parking issues. There is way too much over flow parking on residential streets. Resolve Berest Dance Studio parking and traffic.

More dog-friendly. Dogs should be allowed at the town dock. Need better quality restaurants with outdoor seating. Fewer bodegas. Real gym. Trader Joes!

If we had Trader Joe's, we would never leave the peninsula to find out how lucky we aqre that we do not have chains that attract a ot of traffic, as other places do! ;)
