2nd Annual Bike Ride/Walk for Cancer Research is May 5

Register before April 21 for discounted registration fee.

Here's a great way to spend a Sunday morning in May: take a leisurely bicycle ride or walk while also raising money to beat cancer.

You can do both on Sunday, May 5, when The Lauri Strauss Leukemia Foundation and Port Washington Bicycles join forces again for the 2nd Annual Ride for Research Bike Tour.

The ride will begin and end at Soundview Marketplace on Shore Road. The 11-mile course starts at 8 a.m., and the 4-mile course begins at 9:30 a.m. For safety reasons, tricycles, bicycles with training wheels, scooter and skateboards are not permitted, and every rider must wear a helmet. Port Bicycles is offering registrants a 50 percent discount on any helmet through May 4. Be sure to bring in a copy of your registration confirmation. Rider start times will be staggered to ease bicycle congestion.

All riders will receive an event T-shirt and are invited to an after-ride celebration of food and beverages, and will be given a free raffle ticket to win one of dozens of great prizes donated by local businesses and residents. Extra raffle tickets are also available for purchase.

The $25 early registration fee (through April 21) is fully tax-deductible. All proceeds will be used for research to help find a cure for leukemia and other allied cancers. Port Washington resident Lauri Strauss lost her battle with leukemia at the young age of 26. Several years later, her parents, Evelyn and Herb Strauss founded LSLF. Their events have raised millions of dollars for cancer research and bone marrow drives. Discoveries made through blood cancer research can help cure other forms of cancer.

In addition to rider registration fees and donations made by their personal and team sponsors, the event has secured generous monetary and in-kind sponsorships from local businesses and foundations. Of particular note is Carbon Frame Sponsor, the Peter and Jeri Dejana Family Foundation, which donated $10,000 in support of the event.

“This is a great event that celebrates the beauty of Port Washington while raising money for a very worthy cause,” said Jim Avena, Dejana Foundation Grant Administrator, in a statement.

Other key sponsors include Tire Sponsors, Port Washington Bicycles and The Training Station; and Saddle Sponsors – Arizona Iced Tea, Bluetique, Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty, Entrée, The Froccaro Family, Graphic Group Studio, Greco Integrated Communications, Impulse Boutique, and Wit & Whim.

“The overwhelming support we are receiving from the community is very heart-warming,” noted Evelyn Strauss, committee co-chair and president of LSLF. “This is a fabulous event that is growing bigger every year.”

Evelyn’s co-chair, Ralph Intintoli, owner of Port Washington Bicycles, grew up in Port Washington. He became actively involved in many fundraising activities for leukemia and other blood cancers once his wife, Laura Ann was diagnosed with multi myeloma in 2001. Although she passed away in 2009, Ralph continues to support these causes.

The other Bike Tour committee members are: Debbie Greco Cohen, Evelyn Kannatt, Laura Knepper, Christine Panico , Marvin Rostolder, and Cynthia Wrobel. Visit www.lslf.org for more information, or call 767-1415.
