Bank Grants $2,500 to Port Washington Parent Resource Center

Money to help provide childcare for low income parents taking ESL classes.

The TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, donated $2,500 to The Port Washington Parent Resource Center.

The PRC serves low income families through its Outreach Program. One of the components of the Outreach Program is the English as a Second Language class.  In 2013, the PRC partnered with the Port Washington Public Library and Our Lady of Fatima Church to provide these ESL classes.

Many of the students who take the ESL classes are recent immigrants with young children. Many were unable to take ESL classes that were previously offered in the community because they had no one to watch their young children while they took the class.

The funds from the TD Charitable Foundation provide childcare for the young children while their parents take the ESL class and also provide transportation to and from the class on rainy or cold nights. The ESL class has volunteer teachers from the Port Washington Public Library and the space is donated by Our Lady of Fatima Church.

Lisa Grossman, the Director of Operation for the Port Washington Parent Resource Center said, “We are so grateful for the TD Charitable Foundation’s generous support of our ESL class. Thanks to their $2,500 grant we are able to run this program, which as been a huge success."

Currently, 40 students are registered for the ESL class and 20 on the waiting list, according to Grossman. Many parents of young children who previously were unable to take a class may now have the opportunity.
