“A Celebration of Our 90th Season”

The Freeport Community Band is pleased to present a very special concert this year.  In celebration of the 90th anniversary of the band’s first performance in 1921, our annual park concert is a celebration of our band and the music we have played over the years.  The Freeport Community Band, under the direction of Sandra A, Vigliotti, is sure you will enjoy many of these familiar tunes and enjoy hearing a few forgotten gems! This pot pourri of music will have something for everyone!

The concert will feature band music that has been popular during the band’s 90 years of playing together.  The Second Suite in F for Military Band composed by Gustav Holst is based upon traditional folk tunes of the British Isles and was typical of band music performed in the early 1900’s when the band was first formed.  Many of the sea faring tunes used in the suite will feel right at home by Manhasset Bay!  Theatre and Movie music is always a big favorite for outdoor concerts and the Freeport Community Band will include selections from the long running Broadway hit Phantom of the Opera as well as music from the popular Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Classical music is well represented in this program with Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro Overture and Offenbach’s Ballet Parisian.  Cole Porter’s Night and Day and Burt Bacharach’s What the World Need Now is Love are some of the popular tunes the band has played in the past 90 years.  And what would a band concert be without marches?  This concert features three, Amparita Roco a Spanish passo double, Colonel Bogey March featured in the movie Bridge Over the River Kwai and of course John Philip Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever.

The Freeport Community Band will be performing their Celebration of Our 90th Season on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 8:15 at the John Philip Sousa Memorial Band Shell in Sunset Park.  The concert is free and all are welcome to enjoy an evening of music under the stars.
