Maundy Thursday Holy Communion

"You Want Me To Do What?"  The word "Maundy" derives from "mandatum," the Latin word for "commandment."  On this day Jesus of Nazareth knelt down to wash the feet of HIs friends as an example of servanthood, saying, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another:just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another" (John 13:34).

Christians also believe on this day Jesus instituted the Sacrament of the Altar (also called Holy Communion, the Lord's Supper, and the Holy Eucharist) for the assurance of His continual presence and work in us.

This day brings the 40-day season of Lent to a close as Christians observe the Triduum, the three sacred days of Thursday, Friday and Saturday -- seen as one celebration -- in which are commemorated the central events of Christianity.
