The 2nd Port Washington Community Wide Mitzvah Day

Mitzvah …..noun (pl mitz-vot) Etymology: Hebrew mitz vah….  an act of kindness, a good deed.

For the second time in the history of Port Washington, the Jewish community will come together for Mitzvah Day.  On Sunday, April 29, 2012,  The Community Synagogue, Temple Beth Israel, Port Jewish Center, Chevrat Tefillah, Chabad of Port Washington and The Reconstructionist Synagogue will work collectively to transform the lives of those in need.

What is Mitzvah Day?  It is a day of friendship and community service.  Do you need experience? No.  Is everyone of every age welcome?  Yes!  Are non-affiliated members of our community warmly invited to participate?  Yes!

The day begins at 9:30 at The Community Synagogue located at 160 Middle Neck Road with a complimentary breakfast and registration followed by an opening service and choir performance.  Additionally, Temple Beth Israel and The Chabad of Port Washington will have their doors open at 9:00 am for morning Minyan and Tefillin service.

Highlights of the day will include assembling brown bag meals…planting in an organic garden… recording books on CD… putting together ‘survival bags’ …planting and decorating flower pots…participating in a bone marrow registry…cookie painting…. rolling coins…car wash…challah baking.   Donations and collections have been underway for school supplies, shoes, books, eyeglasses, cell phones, sweatshirts, coats, canned foods, bicycles …. and so much more.

Beneficiaries will include the North Shore – Long Island Jewish Health System, F.E.G.S. Health and Human Services, The Jewish Education Project, Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation (all beneficiary agencies of UJA-Federation of New York), Children’s Advocacy Center of the Bronx, Queens and Manhattan, Mt. Sinai Hospital's Light One Little Candle program, Nothing But Nets, Pedals 4 Progress, special needs schools, orphanages, food pantries and other local and world-wide organizations.

The day concludes with a closing event and ceremony at Temple Beth Israel at 1:30 p.m., where we'll hear the inspirational words of injured Israeli combat soliers who have found meaning in life through their acts of loving kindness, along with a multi-synagogue Choir performance led by Cantor Claire Franco of The Community Synagogue.
