Volunteers Needed for Annual Beach Clean-Up

In an effort to “give back to the community”, Leeds Pond Beach will be the recipient of tender, loving care on Saturday, September 17th (at 10:15 am), as part of the nationwide American Littoral Society beach clean-up.  This national effort is part of an even larger effort called the International Coastal Cleanup.

In 2010, well over 9,200 volunteers collected 186,582 lbs. of debris along 400 miles of shoreline, filling 6,253 bags and dumpsters.  The refuse is simultaneously removed and cataloged.  Data sheets are filled out so that the American Littoral Society can track the type of refuse in our nation’s waterways.

For the sixth consecutive year, the Leeds Pond Beach clean-up will be coordinated by the North Shore Kayak Club (formerly the Twin Pines Kayak Club).  Gloves, trash bags and data sheets will be provided by the Club.  Clean-up crews work in teams of two or three.  At Leeds Pond Beach, past clean-up efforts have produced everything from soda cans to fishing line to fast-food wrappers to a car bumper.

North Shore Kayak Club Site Captain, Gerard Honig, said, “the purpose of this event is to remove trash from otherwise beautiful Leeds Pond Beach, and raise awareness of the importance of preserving marine ecosystems by controlling litter”.

Participants can arrive by foot, canoe, kayak or row boat.  Parking is also available directly across Plandome Road at the Long Island Science Museum.
