The walls came tumbling down on the longtime vacant Shields building in Port Washington just after 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
The 60 year old building, empty for several decades, had been used for multiple purposes including printing and auto service. The rundown, boarded-up, two-and-one-half story house that features decrepit wood siding and asphalt roof shingles, and peeling exterior paint was an eyesore to many in the community for years.
A press conference with local officials and business leaders preceded the demolition at 1070 Port Washington Blvd.
The lot is currently owned by Port Washington Parking District. The district plans to turn the area into a public parking area.
