Light Display Brightens Spirits, Helps Raise Funds For Charity

Two Port Washington parents are dedicating a residential Christmas light display to a foundation set up to honor their daughter who died this year after suffering from an eating disorder.

"The mission of the foundation is to help other teens and young adults suffering with eating disorders and other addictive behaviors," said Bob Young, who's daughter Marie Ashton died Sept. 29, 2013. "We hope to help other families avoid the tragedy we have suffered.

The colorful light display at 9 Sunnyvale Rd. seems to be making a difference in more ways than one.

A recent note left at the Port Washington home helped to cheer up someone having a bad night, according to Young.

"The light display was already gorgeous as is, however, when I read the story about your daughter, I was reduced to tears," said the unknown writer in the note. " I admire your family for staying so strong, and would let you know that after hearing your story, I won't be hurting myself tonight. She would be so proud of you keeping her memory alive. Thank you, God Bless, and Merry Christmas."
