Manorhaven Notebook: Osprey Platforms Built; Street Festival

Osprey Platform Constructed: After Superstorm Sandy devastated many natural habitats for raptors, Barbara Mallon of Manorhaven decided to help. With the aid of Long Island bird expert Jim Jones, the pair worked recently with students from Schreiber's Environmental Club on a project to build and install two Osprey platforms in Manorhaven. According to village officials, Mallon raised $500 from residents for construction costs.

Village Welcomes Attorney: Jim Toner was recently named village attorney in Manorhaven. A graduate of Chaminade High School and the Hofstra University School of Law, Toney is admitted to the New York State Bar and the Northern and Southern Districts of New York. He is a member of the Nassau County Bar Association and the Nassau County Criminal Court’s Bar Association. Toney, who practices law in Mineola, sits on the Board of Zoning Appeals for the Incorporated Village of Sea Cliff, where he resides with his wife and three children.

Baywalk Cleanup: A group of Hofstra intern students supervised by Manorhaven Environmental Commissioner Bob Brinkmann, recently helped with a major fall cleanup of the village's nature trail. Also pitchig in was local Scout troops. The trail is home to waterfowl and many species of birds and constructed with recycled woodchips from Superstorm Sandy. The village is the process of planning educational signage for the trail along with a project of school artwork that will line the walkway.

Street Festival A Success: A portion of Manorhaven Boulevard was closed Oct. 5 for the annual street festival. The event included music, a petting zoo, vendors, tents, clowns, food carts and entertainment. A special hotdog stand was run by the Boy Scouts. outside the Preserve.

Village Clerk Earns Certification: Manorhaven Village Clerk-Treasurer Liz Gaynor was recently awarded her New York State Association of City and Village Clerks  certification as a registered Municipal Clerk. Gaynor received her plaque and pin at the New York Conference of Mayors this fall.

Dog Park Opens: Manorhaven officially opened its Dog Park at a ceremony Sept. 28. Located near the beginning of the path to the newly-opened Nature Preserve Trail, the dog park provides a serene place for canines and their owners to socialize.
