MTA: Haven Ave. Parking Lot Closing Temporarily Aug. 2-3

The lot will be closed in order to remove the pedestrian overpass for safety reasons; service is not expected to be affected, officials said.

The Haven Avenue commuter parking lot will be closed for 48 hours during a weekend in August to remove the Port Washington station’s pedestrian overpass, which was closed in April for safety reasons, the MTA said Thursday.

The commuter lot will be closed for 48 hours during  the weekend of Saturday, Aug. 2, and Sunday, Aug. 3.

The MTA said it closing the lot because of the size of the pedestrian bridge being removed and to make way for the equipment required. The work will begin at midnight Friday and be completed well before the Monday morning rush. Train service is not scheduled to be impacted during the work.

The LIRR says it is notify local residents and commuters of the upcoming work via flyers, posters, ads, social media and through the media. LIRR staff have also been briefing Town of North Hempstead officials about the progress of the project.

Once the overpass is removed, the remaining pedestrian bridge on the east side of the station will be extended to provide access to all platforms. A temporary structure, it will be built with modular, pre-fabricated materials and is expected to be fully installed and open in September.

Looking towards a long-term remedy, LIRR officials say they are continuing to talk to Town of North Hempstead and community leaders about a plan to extend two tracks at the Port Washington station and replace the pedestrian bridges as the LIRR updates the station and prepares for opening East Side Access.

Once East Side Access is complete, LIRR officials say they plan to provide Port Washington commuters with direct trains to Grand Central Terminal, and continuing direct service to Penn Station. Officials say the LIRR will need to store additional trains at Port Washington station so they are in the proper location for the beginning of the morning rush hour.
