Railroad Parking Survey: More Than A Third of Commuters Can't Find Spot

Survey asks 2,090 parking pass holders about parking issues.

A survey about parking at the Port Washington train station of some 2,090 parking pass holders conducted by Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Dina DeGiorgio found that showed that more than a third of respondents were not able to find parking spaces in commuter lots.

At the same time, survey respondents were open to alternatives including riding jitneys, riding bicycles and scooters and other alternatives.

The mail survey, sent in May along with monthly parking pass statements, generated almost a 20 percent response rate, in part a result of threats of losing some 140 of the current spaces to a railroad project that would create two additional tracks for storing trains, according to DeGiorgio.

DeGiorgio urged the formation of a committee representing commuters, civic groups and business leaders, "to explore options, and to work with the railroad to ensure that we make the most of available resources," according to a press release from the councilwoman.

DeGiorgio said she would like the new parking committee to replicate what has already been done in Manhasset and create community involvement and cooperation for better parking solutions.
