Week in Review: School Lockdown; Drive Safely Campaign

A roundup of noteworthy events that took place in Port Washington this week.

Guggenheim Elementary School was in lockdown Wednesday morning, after a parent spotted two men on school property who did not seem to belong on the premises.

One resident told Patch that the lockdown lasted about 30 minutes, but was over by about 9 a.m.

"A parent reported suspicious behavior from two men and they were caught trespassing on the fields at Guggenheim," said School Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Mooney.  Learn more

Police Enlist Kids, Parents in Driver Safety Campaign

Many Port Washington residents want to put an end to the texting while driving, speeding, illegal U-turns, disregard for stop signs and pedestrians in crosswalks, and more.

The initiative includes a contest to come up with the best driver safety slogan, the winner of which to be featured on bumper stickers. (Send your ideas to franklinpwpc@aol.com)

Students involved with Schreiber High School's television station will be charged with the task to produce public service announcements to run in the schools. The goal, Franklin said, is to educate the community members to warn against not only texting and driving, but also walking and texting. Franklin, who works professionally in television, said some of his award-winning producer friends will be giving students guidelines on how to edit their PSAs. Learn more. 

Remembering Sept. 11 

Port Washington residents remembered Sept. 11 in Manorhaven and at Clark Botanic Gardens, where steel from the World Trade Center were unveiled. Port Washington lost several residents to the attacks. Learn more
