Caravaggio and Rembrandt. Rembrandt (1606-1690) and Caravaggio (1571-1610) are considered revolutionary geniuses of the Baroque period in Holland and Italy respectively. Although the artists never met (Caravaggio died when Rembrandt was only four years old), their works share similar technical approaches and themes. Both explored the complexities of human drama with a high degree of realism. Each evolved their own original style with which they changed the course of painting in Europe.
