It would be impossible to watch the Olympics and not hear John Williams’ stirring “Olympic Fanfare and Theme”.  The movie “Chariots of Fire” tells the story of two British runners, Eric Liddel and Sebastian Abrahams at the 1924 Olympic Games.  The band will perform the British Hymn “Jerusalem” that includes the phrase “bring me my chariot of fire” that gives the film it’s title.  The band will also play a medley of music from the film, which includes the unforgettable Chariots of Fire musical theme by Vangelis.  “Gonna Fly Now” also known as the Theme from the movie Rocky, celebrates the sweet science of boxing.  Music from many countries that participate in the Olympic Games will also be highlighted.  George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris”, “A Suite of Greek Love Songs”, “William Tell Overture” celebrating the Swiss hero and “Bands Around the World” are some of the selections on the program.  And no concert at the Sousa Band Shell would be complete without the March King’s most famous march “The Stars and Stripes Forever”.

The Freeport Community Band is under the direction of Sandra A. Vigliotti.  Ms Vigliotti is a Port Washington native and graduate of Paul D. Schreiber High School where she was a winner of the Knowles Award for Performing Arts, as well a recipient of the Port Singers Scholarship. Ms Vigliotti continued her music education with degrees from the Crane School of Music and Columbia University.  She was twice the interim conductor of the Port Washington High School/Community Summer Band and a four time musical director of the Port Washington Teen Summer Theatre/Port Summer Show. She is often found playing the flute at holiday services at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church in Manorhaven. Ms Vigliotti plays the flute and piccolo with many musical groups on Long Island.   A flutist, she recently performed in the world premiere performance of Howard Buss’ Energico! at the National Flute Association Convention.  She also plays flute in many Long Island musical groups and is on the board of the Long Island Flute Club.  As a singer, Ms Vigliotti performed for two seasons with the Bronx Opera Company.   She is also active in Long Island’s musical theatre scene playing piano/keyboards and musical directing.  She was the musical director for the world premiere of  B.T. McNicholl’s Cyrano.com, as well as Cinderella that was performed as part of the Lincoln Center Out-of –Doors Festival.  She has performed with Renee Fleming, Lisa Vroman, Jamie Lynn Seigler and Ashanti.  Ms Vigliotti is also a music teacher in the Glen Cove Schools where she hopes to instill a life long love of music in all of her students.

The Freeport Community Band will be performing their salute to the Olympics on Friday, June 8, 2012 at 8:15 at the Sousa Band Shell in Sunset Park.  The concert is free and all are welcome to enjoy an evening of music under the stars.
