Port Washington Middle School Policy Mocked by Saturday Night Live

Weber Middle School ball ban garners national attention.

Capping a week of national media attention regarding a controversial recess ball ban, Weber Middle School was the subject of a comedy sketch by NBC's Saturday Night Live this past weekend.

Reporting the facts loosely, comedian Seth Myers of SNL mocked the Port Washington school for recently banning "all footballs, baseballs and other sports equipment."

As it stands, footballs are allowed by the school during recess, but only the Nerf variety, according to district officials. Baseballs and lacrosse balls have been disallowed temporarily due to construction which has created limited outdoor space, according to a statement by the school district on Tuesday.

Cartwheels and games of tag among students are discouraged by school district officials during the 20-minute recess period at the middle school, according to an assistant principal at Weber.

Patch was first to report on the story Oct. 4.
